Tell me about the Heads and cabs.....

I probably wouldnt buy the 400/500 watt head because I can pick-up the ABM500 used for the same price or close to it.

But might consider the 300 for the house and Acid Jazz group I play with. :)

Cabs: worth a damn or would Avatar be better?

I've got a pair of 2X12 cabs at my rehearsal place (Metal Band), but I jam out with some other guys... (acid Jazz group), and would like a smaller rig to take out on those gigs....

Thinking maybe the MAG 2x10 or an Avatar 1x12.....

Just curious about the quality of these cabs and heads....

If you buy the MAG300 from Avatar with one of their cabs, they knock $50 off the price.:)

I have a MAG300 and I like it alot. It's not the highest end unit out there, but IMO it's the best in it's price range.

Avatar cabs get solid reviews all over the place, and their service is superior.

Can you give me an idea of the tone and how much Volume I can get out of it?

The heads are among the nicest of the smaller, lower-mid priced solid state heads out there. They compete with GK and, in some respects, are better. The basic tone isn't far from GK, but with emphasis on lows and less high end. Fewer control in the preamp but the EQ is powerful enough you wouldn't miss it.

The cabs get mixed reviews. Eg. Rovito loves his all-MAG setup, but I don't like my older English model MAG 4x10 so much. The tone on the cabs is great but at least mine really needs a lot of midrange dialed in on the amp to cut through.

Tonewise, the cabs sound better than Avatars but my Avatar cuts through better and I think the Avatars are more efficient.

I keep my input volume below half, and if I turn my output to 9 o'clock it'll rattle every room on my dorm's floor and the ones below through my Avatar 2x10.

It gets {censored}in' loud, thats how loud it gets.

I am never in need of more volume on my MAG, and I've played it with guys with Triple Rec's and full stacks.

The sound is warm and round, I think. It's a simple design, and with the VU meter on the input, you can dial in the amount of gain you want and you'll know when it's going to break up. I've used it in several cab configurations, also, and it's sounded great with all of them.

Plus, Ashdown's service has been outstanding.

I have the Mag300 head and an Avatar 2x12 Delta cab. An awesome combination. I play mostly blues/rock at small clubs/bars ( 100 people ) and the occasional outdoor party and have not turned up the output past 1/2 way to play. Input is usually around 1/2 way up unless I am really whacking at the strings for some reason. For the hell of it I had my Jazz Bass plugged into the input at about 1/2, the EQ engaged and turned up past midway on all dials and the sub harmonic off ( mostly useless for my tastes ) and the output at about '8' and played it in two locations:

The first was my garage and {censored} started vibrating and falling off the walls ( rakes, weedwhacker, ladders, etc )

The second was at a soundcheck at a small club and immediately everybody was hollering for me to turn it down.

For my playing style the Jazz/MAG/Avatar system I have is all I will ever want, AND it all fits in my 2003 Mustang.
