I've only heard the single, which is a terrible disaster in my opinion. I've given that band credit in the past for being a complete miracle compared to most of the crap on the radio, but the new tune...it blends in far too much for comfort. Glad to hear the rest of the record is a bit more odd, but I doubt I'll buy it.

Maybe you can help here. I'm trying to get my girlfriend hooked on SOAD. Right now she hates them. However, she also hated Papa Roach until I found a few songs to play that she liked, without telling her who they were. I think she just hates System on principle at this point.

Aside from the new single, which she says is "the most tolerable so far, though still absolutely horrible", what songs should I torment her with that might not be instantly recognizable as SOAD / Serj's voice?

my girlfriend had a similar aversion to everything i listened to for a couple years. the first SOAD song she liked at all was Spiders, she also liked a few songs off of Toxicity and all of Mesmerize. now, her music taste is nearly identical to mine.. THE ASSIMILATION IS COMPLETE :D

They may well be good band, but they're {censored}ing morons for naming their band that...:p

the first album was ok. After that the novelty was over for me. Saw them open for Metallica at Summer Sanitarium in 2000, they were awful. The singes voice is like nails on a chalk board and when the guitarist sings he sounds like a bad cover band singer.

You're trying to get your girl addicted to something she hates? Sounds counter-productive. Maybe you could try getting her addicted to something else and then using SOAD to smooth out the rough parts...like sprinkle some cocaine in her hot chocolate....then after a few mornings of this, slip some SOAD in the CD player and see how she reacts.

How so? I get the impression that they accomplished pretty much everything they had set out to do, if not more. They've really only had distribution problems with one album, and that was more about song titles and lyrical content. (Women: Nature's punching bag, etc.) I think a lot of their success was built on their name and the questionable content of their albums. They are internationally recognized, and put out all of their full length albums on a pretty major death metal label.

Or did you mean they're morons from a less business minded perspective? If you mean they're morons for making fun of pretty much every marginalized group, I'd tend to agree. Part of their appeal to me though.

I think it's really stupid to name your band something that most venues would refuse to put on a marquee, make radio advertising difficult, etc etc. It's hard enough out there.

Yes, but a name like that in death metal is actually more likely to gain you all of those than, say, the Happy Care Bears. I've seen Anal Blast live...boring.

Actually, I'd like to have a band named that and play death metal with Daisy Rock guitars.

So she likes Papa Roach, but can't dig System?

"Baby, I don't know how to say this, but we need to see other people..." :)

I'm downloading it 'as we speak' from Y! Unlimited.

SOAD is simply my favorite current band right now. Toxicity is their best, but I've really enjoyed listening to the Mesmerize album over this summer.

BTW, SOAD is the first very heavy metal band I've gotten into... I'm an old guy who still listens to a lot of heavy classic rock. Any other bands I should check out?

My copy of Toxicity came with a live DVD, and yes, they were absoloutely awful. They were still off a bit when they did that SNL appearance, but I saw part of some MTV thing a couple days ago and they actually sounded GOOD. They're gettin' there.

I have all of their cd's. I like all of them, but Mezmerize is by far their best. Every song on that CD is just good. It's actually one of the few cds that I actually put in and don't skip tracks on. Don't get me wrong, Hypnotize is great, but it has it's share of songs that I don't *always* listen to.
