how do record using my computer

I have an old Tascam 8 track recorder (tape). We used this briefly in my one band to record practice. Some how the drummer rigged it that he used it to record our songs on his lap top. I know that he used a set of those red and white audio cables to do it. Now whether or not the one end fit into his computer I don't remember, but I know that they don't fit into my computer. So exactly how do I do this? I'm assuming that I'll need special cables to do this. Any help with this would be great. :thu:

I think those RCA cables are line-level.

You would need one of those Y dealies, that plugs 2 into 1 thing. That'd be 1/8" for the computer input.

On the other side, it'll either need the RCA inputs on the back of the 2-in-1 or you'll have to get adaptors so they fit in the 2fer.

Anyway, once you've got the cables, you should be able to just plug into your computer's line in and open Audacity or Cakewalk or ProTools or whatever you use and hit "record."

yup, into the mic jack...so, from radio shack, you will need a rca to 1/4" and a 1/8" adapter...

I'll check it out when i get home to see if I can figure it out. I'm functionaly retarded when it comes to the technical aspect of these kind of things so I'm sure i'll eventually figure it out. If not expect a reply to this thread in about 9 hours

sounds good...my mind is telling me that it is located to the left of the track number (but not where the recorded wav file goes)...either that, or under options...

Ok I'll check that out first. Just to cover all of my basses, which outputs do I run the RCA cables out of in the back of the 8 track?

Mixer tool bar...in the view section, it should already be shown, but click dock/float anyway to be sure which bar you're looking at.

From there you can choose input (microphone icon)has a selector for line in, mic, etc.. and output (speaker icon) and adjust volume level for each.

No. I want to use the 8 track just to record bass lines. So I was going to run directly into that and then the 8 track into the computer. I figured I have the thing I may as well use it.

Hosa (cheap) and Whirlwind (much better) both make short adapter cables with RCA female pairs, red and white, and a 1/8" TRS (stereo) male on the other. Just get a long enough dual RCA cable and you're in business.
