35in scale 5 string basses?

My son has an Ibanez BTB1005 which he loves but won't take to college so it doesn't get ripped off.

His crummy old 4 string starter bass did get ripped off when he was playing a gig.

So, now, I'd like to find him a cheap 5 string, but really would like one with the longer 35" scale.

Pretty hard to ask Google for a list, so if you all have ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Thanks!

I guess he could drill a hole in it and lock it to the bed, but really it's a super nice BTB1005, handed down from the bassist of a well-known band; not really replaceable... He's in a dorm...he wants one he can have in his room, reach over and noodle on y'know?

Thanks to all and keep the suggestions coming!

Warwick is making short and long scales as an option now for all of their bolt-on basses.

EDIT: Just realized the "cheap" part of the question :D. Check out their RockBass line, those are cheaper and probably pretty decent.

When I was living in college I was also afraid that my bass might get nicked. What I did was keep it in a locked SKB case and chained that to the bed frame using a Kryptonite bike lock through the handle.

Still easy to get to...you just need two keys (one for the case, one for the bike lock). It's not totally theft-proof. But it keeps casual thieves from swiping it or roomates and vistors screwing around with it. Did that for 4 years without any trouble.

FWIW, I would be much more worried about losing a laptop on campus. Much easier to nick.

Just buy a 5-string Jazz from SX. Who cares if it's 34" scale? The SX is the kind of bass that you can really enjoy and even gig with but no one would steal. It's the official "HCBF budget bass" recommendation :thu:

In that case you'd better buy him four or five at a time. :thu:

a bit of a wobbler here..

what about those hohner steini lookalikes...they do a 5...its not 35"

but its small and could fit in a locker...

and not to obtrusive or heavy to carry around for security purposes..

i thought yamaha did 35" on all their stuff but its only on the upper TRB models

best of luck with the search..

ps i have met a lot of people from connecticut recently visiting our church community..on is a messianic rabbi from south Ct
