Yeah, I haven't seen it do that for a while. I'm just hassling him anyway.

The amount of replies to this thread is incredible. I'm really interested in finding out what vehicle he ends up getting.

I believe those things have a 16 cylinder engine. I also heard that if you're interested in buying one VW sends you to a castle in France to help sweetin the deal. I forget what those things go for, it's around $500,000 I believe, but a tip to a castle is the least they could do

Didn't read the replies because I'm on my way out, but I wanted to mention -- if you're looking at hatchbacks, I'd stay away from diesel ones right now. At this point gas is ridiculously cheaper than diesel -- it's $1.88 for regular here and $2.79 for diesel.

I don't know what the future holds but that doesn't look good to me.

I drive a Pontiac Vibe (same as a Toyota Matrix) and have zero complaints, and it holds bloody well anything.

I've got a Subaru Forrester and love it, but then I'm 50. I like knowing that when I leave a gig at 2 AM on a snowy night my gear and I will make it home safely.

Now that is an automobile

...and at twice the price, twice the maintenance cost, half the gas mileage, and half the life expectancy.

I'll sum that car up in two words...

Dodge blows.

ok, intitial reports. hit a vw dealer up. they tryed to sell me on a markV jetta, the new ones with the 5(!) cylider engine. the salesman wouldn;t let me gun it, said it still has to break in. but driving it around, its was kinda... eh. it worked, it was a nice car, interior was nice. seemed kinda cramped tho. the back seat looked like it could actually fit a human being (and their legs). over all impression was that it was nice, but nothing exciting.

drove a used 2003 golf gls. seemed waay zippier and more fun than the jetta. also, more options. girlfriend was very impressed with the heated seats. drive nice, handled well.

then i took out a 2004 1.8t gti. fun fun fun. even tho its a 2 door, it has a hatch. working the numbers, the gti would be like another $50 a month.

also, due to the depressing state of my credit, i really doubt that i can afford the wrxs. maybe if i find a used one, 03 or 04. but it would have to beat the gti. sunroof, full audio package, alloys, works. as of right now, the gti is in the lead.

zero: i had a tdi, and i am well aware of the cost of diesel  unfortunately the tdi made me a turbo junkie, and thats gonna cost me.

I like the Mazda 6. I bought a 2004 6 wagon for my wife, and it's pretty sweet. 3.0 liter V6.

Better warranty than other cars in it's class, also. 4x40.

As far as VW goes, I wouldn't even dream of buying one. My stepdad is a German Auto guru and technician, and he does more work on the newer VW's than all other German cars combined, including Audi. He says that they have all the appointments of other German vehicles, but the engineering is geared towards mass production and low-cost, which the Germans hate and suck at. Constant maintenance problems.

Do me a favor. If you are out shopping for cars, go test drive a Saturn Ion. Take it to an empty lot and burn it. Saturn can suck a fat dick.

hehe gotta love the interference motors..... you break the belt and valves slam into the pistons and explode... if its a 99, you may want to just looking into the price of new pistons and a remanufactured cylinder head... thats all thats wrong with it...

Have a look at the Saturns...I've had a few and they've been trouble free...Also we had a wagon as a delivery vehicle at work and the thing was last seen with 279,000 miles on it with nothing but regular oil changes, tires, brakes, etc...They sold it in running condition and bought another...My wifes driving a VUE right now and that thing is really solid and gets 28 MPG on the e-way.

Saturn {censored}ed me. The car was OK, I guess (04 Ion) but it would {censored} up, and I'd take it in and they'd be like "oh, it's normal for your front suspension to clunk when it's cold outside. Once it warms up it will stop."

The transmission would downshift 2 gears for no reason, upshift for no reason, the steering gears whined loudly, and it would clunk when you went over speed bumps when it was cold outside. Every one of these problems was "looked at" by Saturn, and the "couldn't find anything wrong."

They treated me like {censored}, the finance people ripped me off (classic scam tactic that I wasn't wise to), tried to get out of paying off all of my trade in, leaving me with a 30 day late on my credit because they tried to refuse to pay the $65 balance that accrued between the time they took possession and the time they paid it off. I called Saturn's customer we-don't-care line and they said exactly that. Don't buy a Saturn.

When that car got stolen it had 25k miles on it, and I had to mask my glee when the cops showed up. I had GAP insurance, and thank god; the value of that piece of {censored} was just over half what I paid for it, and it was only 14 months old.
