Members cthulhu0 Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 hey everybody. my car blew up. the timing belt snapped and took the engine with it. ...even tho i put a new belt on it last year:mad: so hopefully the garage will buy it off me, get me some cash for a down payment. Currently i'm looking at either a subaru wrx or a vw gti. i'm a vw person, but i reeeeeally hate the new jetta designs. the gtis are ok tho. but the vw engines seem underpowered, and recent models are getting worse i don;t want an american car. i don;t like most japanese cars. no suvs or trucks. i need something smallish and nimble for inner city driving. my street i basically a rally course anyway, between the potholes and giant rabid squirrels... as of right now, i'm leaning towards the wrx. i haven;t owned a subaru for years, and know nothing about the current models. anyone have any opinions on the wrx?
Members zachoff Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 WRXs are noticed by police, get poor gas mileage for a small car, and you're probably going to beat the {censored} out of it. If I were to get a newer car, I'd get either a Protege 5 or a Toyota Matrix.
Members BraunS Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 My parents just baught a new golf and I drive it quite a bit. They go the TDI version due to the recent gas prices. I drove it a bit and I was quite impressed, comfy interior, turbo charger gives it a litte mor zip, very economical, good handling and I personally think it is a beautiful car. I strongly suggest you go take on for a test drive.
Members B-Bottom Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 They are fast, and not cheap. I'm a VW guy as well and I agree with your assesment on them. If you wanted to stick with VW and get something with performance you could always get the R32. The pack somewhere around 240 hp if I remember correctly. Check it out http://cars.about.com/od/sportssedans/fr/vwr32_tst.htm
Members Thumper Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 Get a VW Golf. Good handling, easy on gas,and a nice change of pace from cookie-cutter econoboxes. I put 178,000 on mine.

Mini SMustangGTI Q's: New timing belt snapping? Did they really replace it? OEM Belt? Done Properly? What vehicle? Best.

Members BoundandBlocked Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 I've driven the Matrix and I wasn't impressed. Every 4-cylinder Toyota I've driven (I've had Camrys in the past) downshifted while going uphill on the interstate with the cruise on. The same thing happened with the Matrix. I found it very annoying. I've also driven an STI. At 300 HP it was a beast, but the WRX would be pretty quick too. Also, if you got the wagon you could haul your gear around. I don't think a WRX wagon would draw any attention from cops. It doesn't have the giant wing, but it does have the hood scoop. Have you thought about a Legacy wagon or Outback? I currently have a Legacy wagon and I love it. It has AWD and more than enough space for gear. You can get a turbo-charged Legacy with 250 HP. Good luck!

Members BoundandBlocked Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 Originally posted by greenshag isn't that what is supposed to do? Yes, but it is designed to do that because it doesn't have the cajones at low RPM to make it up the hill. If it had more power lower in the revs it wouldn't need to do that. edit: I'm not talking about some mountainous terrain here. I live in Indiana where you can stand on an overpass and see every cornfield in the state.
Members Super_Donut_Man Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 I know you said that you don't like japanese cars, but Toyota is great in the reliability area. But if you are going to not go japanese, I would go to VW

BoundandBlocked: i'm looking at the wrx tr sedan, one without the giant wing and all the accesories and crap. and definately black or someother conservative color. i don;t need to be cop bait. tho the dealer around the corner has a impreza wrx wagon. hood scoop, yes, but a hatch and no wing. Super_Donut_Man: yeah, alot of friends have them, and seem to like them. but i'm not sure i like the stylings. theoriz, Gaui: the audis may end up being out of my range. but i'm still cruising the auto review sites instead of working. i'll post pics of whatever i decide.
Members BoundandBlocked Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 Originally posted by greenshag ok, cool...I was a bit confused, but now I know what you are talking about... Yeah, I wasn't saying that it was malfunctioning when it downshifted; it's just that the engine buzzing away at 4 grand annoys me.
Members mlwarriner Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 my suggestion: with the 5-speed manual.
