Members Rowka Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 Cliff Burton in 1974 playing with his FIRST band! At around 9:50 - the seeds of Seek and Destroy?
Members seraphim7s Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 He must've been ... quite old when he joined Metallica then? Much older than James Hetfield, ey?
Members Rowka Posted November 23, 2005 Author Members Posted November 23, 2005 Burton born in 62Hetfield born in 63 I think the 1974 date for that vid is wrong. That would make him 12.

Members tylytle Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 Gotta love those North Drums... I think that was the name anyway.

Members rikshaw Posted November 23, 2005 Members Posted November 23, 2005 i couldnt take it. i tried but the guitard was killing me with the bow i'll give it a shot again in a little while. maybe it will sound better when i'm drunk
Members der oxenrig Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 I liked the part starting from about 6:00 onwards. Sounded so fricken Pink Floydish.
Members 72Rick Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 The Video Header shows "1984". Makes more sence. I think Eric should have had the Bow in his hands though. Anyone else tried that with their Bass (Analog Delay, Distortion, Morley Wah, Cello Bow)?

I've tried a bow before, didn't really work too well (but then again I don't really know how). But I almost ALWAYS use overdrive, and i've experimented with a digital delay. Actually, because of this clip, i'm gonna do some experimenting tonight.
Members 72Rick Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 Ya, I don't know when he joined Metallica.
Members 72Rick Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 I've just recently received a set of Fender Flat Wounds that I installed on my Custom Bass to try my Bow on, to see if that works out better than Round Wounds. The jury's still out on the better or not part, but I can sure make alot of cool noise with them.
Members 72Rick Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 Damn, I forgot. The first time I tried that combination was on my first 74' Rickenbacker 4001. It was a Jet-Glo also.
Members Benjamin Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 '81 or thereabouts was when Cliff joined the fray. I'd say this clip comes from about '79-80 given the cigarette smoking and legal age. Given he was in another band between this clip and Metallica, it doesn't leave much time. 72Rick: Cliff's Ric was a BurgundyGlo. I am going to resurrect my Morley PWA. I recently purchased a Dunlop 105Q and it isn't the same... maybe I should find an original chrome Morley.

Members FromAbove Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 It almost looks like some kind of school deal going on except for the smoking.
Members fake-bass Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 i like it...its rad...its super psychedelic..very nice
Members fake-bass Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 in the last bit that IS for whom the bell tolls! ha

It looks and sounds standard in that video to my eyes. My guess is he must have modified it to cut through Metallica's guitars better, give more rumble.
Members fremenblue Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 Originally posted by Ace Of Bass Modified with a gibson pickup. (WHY???) He had an EBO pickup at the neck and a jazz pup at the bridge. The Ric pups were too noisy in the studio according to one website, and so the producer had someone rig up his bass this way. Lotsa guys tried the EBO pup around that time, it wasn't just Billy Sheehan. I've always wanted to try Dimarzio's Willpower Neck along with a Rio Grande Pitbull.
Members fuzzyfeedback74 Posted November 24, 2005 Members Posted November 24, 2005 I know this is a bass site (I'm a bassist myself), but isn't that Jim Martin ex Guitarist from Faith No More? I think that Flying V looks like the one he used to play. Anybody agree/disagree?
