i have come to the conclusion, that the reason i like the sounds i get with the roland preamp more that those with the 350x is because of the compression.

who here uses a compressor??

I've just started using one that was hanging around not being used in the bands box of extra goodies.

It is the Alexis Nano Compressor and I'm pleased with the results.

Not blown away or anything, but I think it just "tightens up" the sound a bit.

I'm just using the settings suggested in the manual that came with it to use for "rock bass".

If I had the time / desire to play with the settings a bit more I might be able to really get something amazing but can't seem to find the time.

I agree with this. Plus I use 15" & 18" speakers which don't move as fast - so they don't spike as harshly. If I had a 4x10 I'd want to squash it out a little I guess.

Always - even my 'clean' sound is compressed a little. And used judiciously it doesn't noticeably mess with your dynamics. Here's the best bit - it allows you're overall sound level to be higher in the mix without cutting through unnecessarily.

for those of you who use compression, do you use it before the input on your head/preamp, or do you use it through an effects loop?

I'd like to know the answer to this also.

when I used a compressor, I used it through the effects loop...

I don't use one anymore, as I like a lot of grit in my sound, and as bob said, it messed with my dynamics. I did find it useful when using a synth bass pedal though....
