Members ToeJamFootball Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 i have come to the conclusion, that the reason i like the sounds i get with the roland preamp more that those with the 350x is because of the compression. who here uses a compressor?? ToeJam
Members Rippin' Robin Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 Me. 19" LEM CLX2 compressor, channel (1) set to auto compression, channel (2) set as hard limiter to get the most out of my power amp. It's so frickin' loud you wouldn't believe it.
Members Perfessor Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 Just the one on my amp. Sounds the best to me with a little compression. Just enough to sharpen it up.
Members MacGarnicle Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 Yep, one for each preamp channel
Members Thumper Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 Inboard compressor on the Nemesis combo, plus a Black Finger tube compressor (more as an effect than as a limiter).
Members Moody Johnny Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 Multi-band is the only way! But of course, some rackmount hi-end compressor would provide more parameters to control. Maybe one day...
Members ToeJamFootball Posted November 29, 2005 Author Members Posted November 29, 2005 a limiter/enhancer pedal is a compressor right?? ToeJam

Members bnyswonger Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 I use one for sustain as an effect only. I don't like the idea of my dynamics getting messed with continuously.
Members g.ghost Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 I've just started using one that was hanging around not being used in the bands box of extra goodies. It is the Alexis Nano Compressor and I'm pleased with the results. Not blown away or anything, but I think it just "tightens up" the sound a bit. I'm just using the settings suggested in the manual that came with it to use for "rock bass". If I had the time / desire to play with the settings a bit more I might be able to really get something amazing but can't seem to find the time.

I agree with this. Plus I use 15" & 18" speakers which don't move as fast - so they don't spike as harshly. If I had a 4x10 I'd want to squash it out a little I guess.
Members Adrenochrome Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 Always - even my 'clean' sound is compressed a little. And used judiciously it doesn't noticeably mess with your dynamics. Here's the best bit - it allows you're overall sound level to be higher in the mix without cutting through unnecessarily.
Members ravlin Posted November 29, 2005 Members Posted November 29, 2005 for those of you who use compression, do you use it before the input on your head/preamp, or do you use it through an effects loop?

Members greenshag Posted December 6, 2005 Members Posted December 6, 2005 when I used a compressor, I used it through the effects loop... I don't use one anymore, as I like a lot of grit in my sound, and as bob said, it messed with my dynamics. I did find it useful when using a synth bass pedal though....
