Members ministryoflower Posted November 30, 2005 Members Posted November 30, 2005 We were in rehearsal working on a new song and I landed on the perfect groove for the verse then realized it was the bass groove fo DISCO INFERNO....a great bassline. Anyone else stumble onto a great line and discover it's a classic already?
Members Jaymz Posted November 30, 2005 Members Posted November 30, 2005 All the time unfortunatly... One time we were in practice and I just started playing a random doodle and the drummer shouts "Hey! That's a Rage Against The Machine song!" ... I don't even listen to 'em. =/
Members Texas Noise Factory Posted November 30, 2005 Members Posted November 30, 2005 Yeah, I hate that... kinda makes you think it'd be a bit lucrative nowadays to remember the riff if it's pretty catchy, and kinda close to a famous riff... Seeing how cheezily similar some commercials' songs are to some original popular tunes... Could be a quick way to make a dime? Oh yeah... and disco basslines do tend to kick ass at times.

Members sunburstbasser Posted November 30, 2005 Members Posted November 30, 2005 I wrote the song "Your My Stepping Stone," a few decades after the Monkees had a hit with it.
Members Jaymz Posted November 30, 2005 Members Posted November 30, 2005 I stated that I made it up on the spot, then the producer/mentor guy (He came to our school to help out with bands, he was in some 80's hair metal band I think) teamed up with the drummer in the argument. Damn them all.
Members brake Posted November 30, 2005 Members Posted November 30, 2005 one eight one eight one eight playing disco bass can actually be really fun

Members mounds Posted November 30, 2005 Members Posted November 30, 2005 i grew up with my mom blasting disco all the time, so i have no aversion to it. disco musicians certainly know how to groove. i saw donna summer in august, and that was pretty badass.. and later that week, i saw behemoth.. woot. lol.
Members gretschzildjian Posted November 30, 2005 Members Posted November 30, 2005 Yeah, disco bass lines can be great. One of the most groovy I recently heard is the one to Jamiroquai's Don't give hate a chance. Man, that's so juicy!!!

Members ministryoflower Posted December 1, 2005 Author Members Posted December 1, 2005 damn disco inferno creeping into my psyche...a commercial is using it again.
Members bonscottvocals Posted December 1, 2005 Members Posted December 1, 2005 Disco Inferno is such an incredibly infectious song. I love playing that and You Should be Dancing. It's all about feel and attitude when it comes to those tunes, and as much as people will slam disco, when they hear those songs, the dance floor fills fast!
Members lug Posted December 1, 2005 Members Posted December 1, 2005 My theory is that all the disco-hate back in the late 70's/early 80's really came from guitarists. Disco guitar parts were usually religated to some sort of time keeping function that sounded like: weedleydeet....rest....rest....rest....restweedleydeet....rest....rest....rest....restweedleydeet....rest....rest....rest....rest.

Yeah, a drummer I used to play with swore that a White Stripes song "Seven Nation Army" was the same bassline as "Big Balls" from AC/DC. I'm not a fan of either song or band, so I can't quite conjur up what they sound like in my head, but I'm pretty sure they're fairly different...if not in notes, at least in feel. Confirm or deny?

Members takeout Posted December 1, 2005 Members Posted December 1, 2005 The 70's were a Golden Age for bass in a lot of ways. Most disco records, hell - even ABBA records had huge low end and great playing. You just had to suffer through insipid lyrics to get to it. Alice Cooper is on record as saying that all the rock guys in the 70's loved Saturday Night Fever - but none of them would admit it at the time.
