I like my action low, and i think the nut could do with some filing. How big is the distance between the fret board and the bottom of the string groove? How low can you go?!

Hey there-

I just got out my MTD 635 fretless, which has perfect action IMO. I tried eyeballing it with my little machinist's ruler, which goes down to 32nds and 64ths, gave up, and went to the feeler gauges: Near as I can tell, the distance is .009 inch for the low B, and .005 for the high C. It may even be less right at the nut, because, since the feeler gauges are half an inch wide, you're actually measuring that far away from the nut.

But anyway -- I think the answer is, you can go REALLY low!

Mine is at the same level as the board.

It takes a very well made, straight neck though.

You want to leave something like 1/12" just to be sure.

Instead of filing the grooves, sand the base of the nut, this way you wont have to reshape it and if you {censored} up, you can still add a shim under it.

When I pulled the frets out, it was about 0.070". Even I could tell that was WAY too much. Milled the bottom side so now it's about 0.020". Much much better. I want to try another 0.010.
