Mrs. Rowka wants me to take a wall in our house and sheath it with slatwall to display my bass collection. How cool is that?

You got a good one, there. :)

I'm doing the same thing, already picked up a load of slatwall hangers off eBay, have to get the panels and get started on it.

Did you get these?

I was leaning towards the Swing String, but they are a bit spendy. I like their stuff, though.

Mrs. Rowka sounds really cool :thu:

I hope when I get married my wife understands bass/music.

Basses are like shoes, you need different ones for different jobs. :D

I bought a batch of 30, I think, may be from the same seller, it was a music store liquidation. The ones I got are the adjustable angle type, that can switch to either side, they have knobs on the end somewhat like the String Swing "stoppers". I have dozens of String Swings too, but I needed something with more "wall density".

Here's a pic of the ones I got:

Rowka, my wife is the same type of girl...but she insists on having the hangers drilled into the studs in the wall...she knows axactly how many pennies each and every one of these critters is worth...

We thought about that first, but as:

A) - my bass count is an ever increasing number

2) - she get's to arange them in an aesthetcally pleasing display

b) - those slatwall panels are pretty darn strong

we decided to go with the slatwall.

Home Depot's got the white 4x8 panels for just under $40. If we get these, I'll either paint them black ior glue on some oak veneer and stain it. Otherwise I'm gonna check out a store-fixture shop in town and see if they have any with a dark wood laminate already installed.

Thanks, Piggy.

To be honest I haven't brought her in yet.

Right into the studs (if you can find them), in lines along where the hangers will be, approximately. I'm also planning on tacking the slatwall to the backer (paneling, in my case) in between studs, near where the hangers will be.

There's also a place that makes really heavy duty slatwall, but I'm not sure it's really necessary, and it's very pricey: http://www.walltowallstorage.com/catalog/item/1713935/1144996.htm

Dan:

I'd make real sure I was getting all the way through the drywall and into the stud with a good bit of the screw. I would not want to rely on the tensile strench of gypsum to hold my instruments. With 5/8" drywall and a 3/4" new layer I'd use at least 2-1/2" drywall screws.

The slatwall makers recomend 2" drywall screws into studs. I will not be putting the screws in where there are no studs.

Is that spec with the slatwall being applied over drywall or to a bare stud?

Over drywall.

24 evenly spaced screws per 4x8 board.

I will probably go overboard myself and hit a screw in every slot over every stud.

Interesting... I have three pairs of shoes (two pairs of boots and an old pair of Converse Chuck Taylors), and four basses. I think my priorities are straight.
