Members brake Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 what're some good simple/groovin' slap bass tunes? no rhcp, for the love of god.
Members fleizenkruz Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Victor Wooten's "Classical Thump" it's on the album "A Show Of Hands" that album is a classic masterpiece for me
Members Estebum Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Simple? groovin? classical thump? nein.
Members eflat Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 level 42 have some good tunes, check out "love games" and "hot water", ALSO RHCP "higher ground" "aeroplane" etc, quite good for practising technique. Also Marcus Miller has some classic slap, his version of Jaco Pastorious's "teen town". good luck!
Members bassplayer7770 Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Would Fishbone's "Bonin' in the Boneyard" qualify? Probably not "simple" enough...
Members EZ3X3 Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 You want simple, then try Slide by Slave, Brick House by the Commadors, or Fantastic Voyage, by Lakeside. I don't know if those are simple enough for you, but they are simple.
Members theoriz Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Everything from Brothers Johnson. The guy invented slap! Level 42 takes +1.
Members bassplayer7770 Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Perhaps some Sly & The Family Stone???
Members theoriz Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Originally posted by bassplayer7770 Perhaps some Sly & The Family Stone??? They take a big +1, as well. Or should i say +1
Members EZ3X3 Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Originally posted by theoriz Everything from Brothers Johnson. The guy invented slap! Level 42 takes +1. No he came after Larry Grahm. Larry put slap on the map.
Members theoriz Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Well perhaps you are correct. Though Louis did take it to the next level IMO.
Members nicebigstrings Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Yep, Larry Graham invented it. Louis Johnson and Stanley Clarke were hot on his heels after that. If you want to hear slapping that is FUNKY (and not all slapping is funky) then get yourself a good compilation of Graham Central Station. For a good slapping groove tune listen to 'Hair' by Sly and the Family Stone.

Members EZ3X3 Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Hair was not done by Sly, it was done Grahm Central Station. The first Lp they dids
Members FreestyleIntruder Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Suicidal Tendencies - 'Send Me Your Money' Gary Willis - 'Bent' are both great slap songs

Members nicebigstrings Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Have any of you heard 'It's the Pits' by Jonas Hellborg? It's just Jonas ripping it up in the key of E on solo bass. Pretty damn cool because he really winds out but keeps it FUNKY, unlike other players who lose the funk when they slap/shred. I had a Swedish pal bring me Jonas' 'Elegant Punk' vinyl LP from Sweden a few years back. Haven't heard it in a while because my tuntable is long gone. Cool disc though; he does a solo version of 'Little Wing' on it. I've seen Hellborg play live twice now and he's kind of an interesting contrast to Louis Johnson. Louis plays wide but Jonas works real close with a minimum of movement almost like a classical guitarist.
Members LO_RYDER Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Anything by Marcus Miller & Louis Johnson (Brother's Johnson) & larry Graham. These guys will have your hands full and head spinning for a few years.

Vic doesn't use the "traditional " slap technique and it's a major bitch! This doesn't mean no one else can do it...but you will have much greater success wlth "traditional 'slap technique. Just my opinion... I am sure a few folks will claim that it's not so hard and they have it down....ummmm yeah, right! lol
Members zenfascist Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Fishbone - Lemon Meringue And lots of Primus. It does a body good.
Members SoundwaveLove Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 Almost anything by primus
Members niomosy Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 PrimusBrothers JohnsonVictor Wooten (he doesn't always go completely nuts with slapping) Can't believe it hasn't been mentioned yet but... Marcus Miller.
Members SpaceGhost Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 The Reddings. You know that slap fest called "the Awakening" that Claypool does? Well, that was originally made by The Reddings and a lot of their stuff is groovy the max.
Members rikshaw Posted December 28, 2005 Members Posted December 28, 2005 check out faith no more. that stuff is pretty simple
