Members degroove Posted December 30, 2005 Members Posted December 30, 2005 Been falling in love all over again with Jaco's The Chicken from his live The Birthday Album Concert. I have never learned a Jaco tune before, but this one sounds like a blues progression to me and I am thinking about figuring it out. Anyone ever learned this tune? I play with a blues cover band and the guitaris wanks on every tune. I was thinking what a riot it would be to add this eventually and make him cop the chords while I went nuts for a tune! Alright, maybe I have unrealistic fantasies, but has anyone mastered this one? Any tips? Thanks!
Members One Bad Monkey Posted December 30, 2005 Members Posted December 30, 2005 If I remember it, it's fairly straight forward with a couple nice twists in the middle/end. Really, it's a simple enough tune, that I used to cop some of the melody with the sax player when I played it. Comp-wise, keep that funk groove going with some signature Jaco slides, and you should be fine. It's just a fun tune to play.
Members bassplayer7770 Posted December 30, 2005 Members Posted December 30, 2005 That is a very cool groove. I heard a local band play it once but couldn't remember the name at the time. They played it extremely well. The bassline just kicks ass... The Chicken is included in The Essential Jaco Pastorius book. I have that book and Jaco Pastorius: The Greatest Jazz-Fusion Bass Player.

Does the book include chord progressions? My site reading sucks, I hate tab, but like progressions to make figuring the lines out by ear easier.

Members One Bad Monkey Posted December 30, 2005 Members Posted December 30, 2005 Hmm...I've got it on iTunes, let me see if I remember it to at least get you going... Bb7 / Bb7 / Bb7 / Bb7 /Eb / Eb / D7 / G7C / C / C / nc / Bb7 / Bb7 / Bb7 / Bb7 I'm sure something is wrong somewhere, but give that a shot.
Members bigby Posted December 30, 2005 Members Posted December 30, 2005 Yeah, awesome groove! I knew it several years back, remember it being a fairly straightforward groove; one of the few grooves of Jaco's I was able to keep up with. I believe it builds off of the a# on the E string, then just walking up the A string on the d, d#, f and D string g and octave a#. Of course, once you get a Jaco groove down, he then throws in these really cool variations, so it's tough to do exactly what he's doing. But this groove is very open to playing around with the 1rst, 3rd and 5ths..

My favorite Jaco tune The Birthday concert version of the Chicken is awesome but the live version from 1982 is even better IMO. You can hear the live version on the Anthology 2-disc set. The Chicken live 1982
