Corrosion itself isn't much to worry about as far as getting it cleaned up nicely. My worry would be if the previous owner let it get to that point, what is the rest of the bass like? Ever been set-up, or has it been abused / neglected to the point where it won't be an easy / cheap fix.

Spent too much time played on or /near the beach...salt corrosion....played a 69 MIA Jazz in Puetro Escondito Mexico like this....stings all salty like....cables crusty etc. Just needs cleaning. And the appropriate beverage for the job!!!!

In 84', a guy brought his 70's Stingray to the store I worked at to get replacement parts for his bridge. He was from the East Coast, Boston I believe. He took his Bass out of the case while he told us how he had extremely corrosive sweat and he needed to replace the saddles and the rest of his bridge hardware because of it.

It was true! His bridge looked as if someone had poored acid on it! The metal was melting away!

Crazy stuff but it's real. It's not from neglect!

Sometimes just wipping down after playing isn't enough.

My SR5 is almost 18 years old and the hardware is tarnished but not corroded. I think the tuning machines are of a different metal than the rest of the hardware and not chrome plated. The bridge and neck plates are shiny and corrosion free but there is some rust on the saddles. The way I look at it is it's the price you pay when you own an eighteen year old instrument. It doesn't effect tone and has a lot more soul than a bass that looks look like a shiny new penny. I actually had someone ask how I did that to my tuning machines, the thought it looked "cool".

probably caused by sweat etc...

the tuning pegs look ok

check the bridge and strings...if the strings are rusty...then you need to look closer at say the pup poles.

consider the pots may need replacing or just some of that cleaning fluid

i dont think electronics would suffer unless stored in really bad conditions in which case you would see great deterioration on the external body work and frets..

all in all it would be good to restring it and see how it sounds and if the pots crackle a lot...

not a really bad situation..all can be put right...if the price is right:)

My sweat is quite acidic, but it affects different hardware in different ways eg it tarnishes stainless steel easier than nickel! Actually, I remember the hardware on my Ibby Artcore started rusting pretty much straight away, but my cheapo fretless J is holding up well...
