Members fake-bass Posted January 17, 2006 Members Posted January 17, 2006 flat wound strings are what you would use on a fretless right? do flat wounds sound good on a fretted bass? stupid {censored}ing stupid question...
Members Monkabutt Posted January 17, 2006 Members Posted January 17, 2006 You can use flat or round wound strings on a fretless (or fretted for that matter). Round wound will have a bit more zing tone-wise but will tend to chew up your fingerboard a bit faster.
Members King Kashue Posted January 17, 2006 Members Posted January 17, 2006 Best not to swear in the thread title...And you can use either type of string on a fretless, though roundwounds will definitely chew the board a bit...
Members Emprov Posted January 17, 2006 Members Posted January 17, 2006 Typically, yes. I do know players who use rounds on frettless though. It all comes down to preference.

Members sunburstbasser Posted January 17, 2006 Members Posted January 17, 2006 Flats on fretted bass? It was the standard for the world until the mid 70s. Only a select few used roundwounds (Entwistle and Squire come to mind). They don't have the snap of rounds, but they last forever and unlike rounds they never really die, they just kinda go "boom" after a while and never change again.

Members Thumper Posted January 17, 2006 Members Posted January 17, 2006 It's really a matter of taste. I've had flats and roundwounds on fretted and fretless basses. Right now I have flats on my fretless Jazz and the Harmony H-22. They just seem like the right string, the right sound and the right vibe for those particular instruments. The rest of the herd has roundwounds, tho' I'm toying with the idea of putting flats on the T-bird just for an experiment.
Members BigPigPeaches Posted January 17, 2006 Members Posted January 17, 2006 Cliff Williams uses flats on his basses for recording, and rounds live. Claims they have a great punchiness for recording purposes. I use half-rounds on my fretless; these are roundwounds that have been ground smooth, they're tonally halfway between flats and rounds but don't chew up fretless boards.
Members bigby Posted January 17, 2006 Members Posted January 17, 2006 It's been years since I played a fretless, but used to use halfwounds...they still around?
