Members myunghoonie Posted January 30, 2006 Members Posted January 30, 2006 hope people don't get annoyed by the question. i need something to play in rock clubs 'n stuff. i have a borrowed swr workingman 4004, but it farts each time i turn it up, so i'm thinking it might be blown speakers. not sure. anyway. what's good wattage for gigs like that? i probably need to be pretty loud, but how many watts? i've been looking at the gallien krueger rb series and i want to know if the 700 rb will do or if i need the 1000rb. ORjust some good suggestions for amps and what might make me choose one over the other? like what's the difference in sound between the gk rb amps and ampeg svt's? i will be playing mostly post-hardcore-ish/prog rock stuff, but i also want really good tone for slapping because...i just love the funk. yeah...suggestions will be much appreciated.i would like to know what to look for once i get to the guitar store. thanks -Mike
Members JeffBass Posted January 30, 2006 Members Posted January 30, 2006 I have a 4 year old 700rb-115 combo and with an extension, it's pumping out an ear-splitting 430watts (380 lows + 50 highs, bi-amp). The new RB700 heads puts out 530 watts, which is more than you'll probably ever need! I play my stack at less than half-volume and still get yelled at by soundmen and band members. MF.com is selling the 700rb head for less than 600 bucks, it's a steal. GK's are better for funk and slapping than SVT's IMO, because they are so quick to respond. No need for a compressor because you can't "spike'em" into breaking up. The bi-amp feature will let you dial in a perfectly balanced tone also because you can use the DRIVE to "fuzz up" the woofers while the tweeter stays clean (because it's a separate amp). A perfect rig? GK 700rb head. GK NEO 1x12 cab (or a 2x10) on top of a NEO 1x15 cab.
Members myunghoonie Posted January 30, 2006 Author Members Posted January 30, 2006 1x12?not a 4x10? what's the difference between a tube and solid state amp? do you get distortion with tube? i'm a bit confused on the subject.

The way they amplify is completely different. If you push a tube amp, it'll distort nicely. Pushing a solid-state amp will kill your speakers, if you go too hard. However, with the 700RB you don't have to worry about pushing it too hard I don't think. GK is an excellent all-around amp that'll never sound bad, though it may not always be what you want.

Hey man, it's your back... 4x10's sound good, but so do 2x10's, and the difference in volume isn't really all that much. I'm using a 2x10 on top of a 1x15 with a 300w head and it's PLENTY loud, but still tight. 1x12's are loud but still punchy, though if I were going to put 12's in my rig it would be a 2x12 and a 2x10. Members myunghoonie Posted January 30, 2006 Author Members Posted January 30, 2006 so when comparing the svt pro series and the rb series, the rb is better for funk? i didn't quite understand the 'quick response' thing that jeff was talking about. any other suggestions for amps? genz benz? hartke? i don't know anything about amps...
Members zachoff Posted January 30, 2006 Members Posted January 30, 2006 If you're on a budget, nothing beats Peavey, IMO... A Max head and a TVX cabinet would suit you well. If you have money to spring for the 410TVX, do it. If not, a 2x10 or a 1x15 (depending on the tone you're looking for) will be OK for gigs. Really, you'll be playing DI into the board at shows & will only be using your amp/cab for stage volume. SWR Pro gear kicks tons of ass but is pretty pricey. Their Workingmans stuff is junk, IMO.
