... So I was doing an online billpay thing the other day, direct from my savings account. $25.00

TWENTY FIVE dollars. Apparently I made a mistake somewhere. I didn't have $25.00. I had $24.53, and then I had another $10 or so in my checkings because I just got done paying all my bills.

So... rather than take the 47 cents from my checking, the bank charges me a $20 overdraft fee. My credit card (Which I was making the payment on to take care of a bill) charges me a $25 returned online payment fee. A $30 returned check fee, and a $30 overlimit fee.

Total amount of miscalculation? $0.47, total cost $130.

Just how I wanted to kick my day off...

That's nothing. I overdrafted my checking this summer, just buying a few small things. 2 packs of cigs, on my card, a pack of guitar strings, a book, all on my card. Unfortunately, all this was overdrafted to my checking account. Now instead of taking it out of my savings, which they should, they just charged me $40 for each overdraft. Final result? $500. $500 in the hole. That's a freakin' bass amp. I was pissed. Thing is, without the 'fees' I should have only been in the hole about $30. It's just the lot of little transactions killed me.

At work, I sometimes have to get involved on service calls from them (they use our stuff). You should see what they're like on that end - un-be-*&^%$8-lievable. They hire very smart folks, but they must have to pass some sort of hardass bad-attitude test, too.

Man I love my bank...er...Credit Union. Overdraft fees are $5. If you overdraft, they automatically move money from one or more savings accounts to cover the overdraft...still only get charged $5.

I know...you all hate me now. :D:wave:

Bank of America is cool if I overdraft they just charge me whatever they paid for. It's cool.

Im thinking of switching to Liberty Bank though, which offers a no monthly charge, and a no charge for the use of other ATMS. Im not sure about there over draft policy though.

I have USAA. You have to be military to join. They don't charge me anything if I overdraft, although I would never let that happen. They also pay me back my ATM fees that other banks charge. So every month I get 15-20 bucks back from ATM fees and I get my debit fees back as well. I love em.

I stopped doing online bill paying because of this very reason. I made a 64 cent mistake that cost me $140. Never again. These days, I prefer to handle my money and financial obligations old-school style. Seemed to work OK for my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

I love the fact that the bank still charges you a fee for not having the 47 cents without actually having the courtesy to front it to you so you could make the credit card payment.

This is all done by computers, and there's no thinking or feeling human being behind any of it. It can't really be taken personally, but it still sucks.

Credit unions are the only way to go, IMO. No changes for anything, use any ATM for no fee, overdraft protection for free... I'm sticking with my CU forever.

I can't believe a bass player would say that. He did say he bought strings, if that isn't managing money I don't know what is.

Credit Union!!!!!!!!!!

Only way to travel. My Mom had worked for many years for a small bank that got taken over by BOA. She kept her job, but she left after a year because she couldn't stand that the system made her treat long-time customers like {censored}.

She hated it...."I'm sorry, I can't help you, you need to call this 800 number"....Uggh!

something similar happened to me, i had taken my grand marquis off of the road 'cause i didnt need to drive it anymore, anyway - i cancelled my insurance payment, it was supposed to come out on the 19th, it was cancelled WELL before that, so I didnt have any money in the account. at least, not nearly enough to cover the insurance.

what happens? they try to take the {censored}ing money out, twice. 35 dollar insufficient funds fee both times.. so i show up at the insurance office the next day fuming and the response was basically "yeah, it's our fault, but it's your problem. would you like to sign up for -insert random promotion here-?"

i'm gonna keep my money in a sock under my mattress..
