Sounds like you're driving a manual, sweet! Before you hit the streets, get VERY comfortable with the clutch engagement, and clutch/throttle coordination. Practice getting moving from complete stops, until you can do it without even thinking about it. Then try it on an upslope. BTW that's real driving, so have a blast!

Members Thumper Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 Try to keep all four wheels in contact with the road. You can experiment with fewer wheels later... What are you driving? Please tell me it's a Holden ute...

Ahh, don't sweat it, it's no different than if it was a level street, you just have to be a little quicker without losing the smoothness. Practice it on a flat parking lot, and work at increasing your speed. But, make sure you don't lose a smooth transition just to be fast. Enough practice and you won't even think about it anymore. Except, you just know the first time you get out on an uphill street, some yahoo is going to pull up about 6 inches behind you! Really, just get it down smooth and you'll have no problems.
Members bassguy Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 i learned stick in a 1996 volvo 850 turbo...not the best car to be learning to drive, but i went to some hills about 50 mins away, and did amazing...sped, did steep uphill starts, reverse starts, all the goodies...definatly the most fun i have ever had...only stalled 2wice...the car has since been totaled by my bud on weather related accidents, and it makes me sad...ive never had such a fun car to drive...

Members ToeJamFootball Posted February 6, 2006 Author Members Posted February 6, 2006 yeah thats the plan, get good at taking off before i hit the streets, i am just to scared of stalling on a busy road.

When they see the flashing brake lights, and see my car rolling back a little they will leave extra room! Sure made it easier to get going again not worring about rolling back into them. And it only takes a little practice before this gets to be second nature for you. Once you get the coordination down, it really is a simple task.

Pay a lot of attention to the point where the clutch *just* begins to engage. You will need to be able to let it out to this point and HOLD it, as you bring in some throttle. Then you can start letting it fully engage as the car accelerates. That really is the toughest part to get down. Most newbies simply let it out too fast and to far into its engagement, and cause a likely stall. Stay calm, smooth, and let the clutch slip before you release it too far. You can really only learn this by doing, and at first it will seem a little awkward but keep at it. It is really fun when you get better!
Members SteveyDevey Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 I'm glad to hear you're learning manual! I love my little stick car, and I think everyone should have to learn to drive 'em if they want their permit. I know I'm a much better driver than I would be if I had been driving automatic my whole driving life instead of manual my driving whole life.
Members xdamagexx Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 good luck., just don;t ask your mum to grab your shifter..... m/

Members Perfessor Posted February 6, 2006 Members Posted February 6, 2006 You're going to stall on a busy road, you going to stall in a busy intersection and your going to stall pulling out into traffic. That said, good luck.
