Members Duck Blues Posted February 8, 2006 Members Posted February 8, 2006 Hi gang question for you. Does it matter if I deside to invent my own right hand finger style? after I learn my timing?
Members Duck Blues Posted February 8, 2006 Author Members Posted February 8, 2006 Originally posted by bassplayer7770 Right Hand Technique Thanks dude, Thats basically how my teacher taught me, But I was just wondering if I can invent my own? like Vic's and Ducks?
Members Adrenochrome Posted February 8, 2006 Members Posted February 8, 2006 Well of course you can invent your own style. Most people will show you tried and tested techniques that will work for a variety of music. I use the same basic technique (mainly first 2 fingers) for everything from hardcore metal to ballads. If you find a style that's very specific to one style of music you may find it's not as easy to play all types of music with it.
Members Bassius Posted February 8, 2006 Members Posted February 8, 2006 oo oo oo try this onehttp://www.garywillis.com/pages/lessons/rh1.html

Too true. Only reson I'm asking is I want to use my index finger & my pinky to play 8th notes , For instance like the iron man riff, It works way better then you're index finger & you're bird finger you know?
Members hobobot009 Posted February 8, 2006 Members Posted February 8, 2006 I recently found out I actually play faster and more accurate with only my index finger James Jamerson style:freak: .

Members rudetay2 Posted February 8, 2006 Members Posted February 8, 2006 Originally posted by hobobot009 I recently found out I actually play faster and more accurate with only my index finger James Jamerson style:freak: . I play slap on upright with just my index finger, I just started doing it without noticing, and I can go much faster using one insted of the normal two finger way. For electric bass I do the walking 1-2-1-2-1-2 pretty much 80% of the time 15% thumb only or index finger only and the other 5% of the time I use a finger just like a pick and hit the string with my finger nail.

Very cool, How different is the upright compaired to ours?

Whenever I do any recording, I'll go to the one finger method. I find that it's much easier to get even attacks and durations on the note.

Members Crescent Seven Posted February 8, 2006 Members Posted February 8, 2006 I use 3 fingers, the index and middle for standard 8th notes, etc, and the ring finger to pluck my octaves or other intervals on the D and G strings if I have a n 8th or 16th note accent. Works good, I keep my nail on my ring finger long so I get a plucky attack with it, so I can use it on any string if I want a biting sound. C7
Members sunburstbasser Posted February 8, 2006 Members Posted February 8, 2006 I try not to over-analyze my right hand style. I just play. Typically, 2 fingers, sometimes 3/pick/slap.
Members JC Bass Posted February 8, 2006 Members Posted February 8, 2006 Use what works for you...everyone has their own style that evolves over time. It will always begin with the classic methods and will grow from there.
Members Duck Blues Posted February 8, 2006 Author Members Posted February 8, 2006 Ok thanks gang, mine seem to be invloving in to index finger, and the pinky finger, its working out great for 8ths and such.

Members Emprov Posted February 8, 2006 Members Posted February 8, 2006 Originally posted by Duck Blues Hrmm thanks. Its something to think about. Keep in mind that I only use a single finger when recording, i.e. when it's hyper important to have constistant tone from note to note....and know that I'm pretty much overly anal about stuff like this.

Duelly noted. Woohoo My timing is getting better, I've used the metronome for about 30 minuts while I practice. Anways should I stay with my current style till I really good? Possible good as lug?
