Members no-logic Posted February 12, 2006 Members Posted February 12, 2006 Off and on for a while now I have been gassing for a GBE600. (No thanks to you guys) I use Ampeg B2R's now and like the sound but always think that maybe there is something that sounds better. I like the Ampeg because of the way it sits in the mix. It has that stand out punch that brings the bass out of the background but yet not totally in your face. I have tried others one of which was an Eden WT-400. The Eden did not have the punch and definition of the Ampeg. This has been the case with others as well. So, with all that being said, how does the GBE600 fit in here? Do they have a "stand out" type of sound or are they more subtle and subdued?
Members illidian Posted February 12, 2006 Members Posted February 12, 2006 Depends on the rest of the rig, in my experience. With my rig: Just the LS-210T, the sound has a great punch to it. Punchy bass that's audible in the mix. Not out front, unless I EQ it to be that way. Well-balanced - supporting yet cutting at the same time. Just the Peavey Black Widow, it's very punchy. A lot of punch. Very out front in the mix. Both cabs, for me it's the perfect balance. It cuts through a lot. It is heard. But it's supporting at the same time. To me, it's subtle and subdued but it also stands out in the mix.
Members roger hart Posted February 12, 2006 Members Posted February 12, 2006 well, it is designed to be very much in your face and SUDDEN. It will be way more sudden (quick responding) then your ampeg. Only you can decide if that is a good thing or not. If your technique is happening and you want your bass to feel and sound articualte, it will be good. I can play anything and I own all sorts of manner of amps. I have not played a punchier amp on the market. A lot will also have to do with what bass you play. If you play a Ray, it will be in your face like you haven't heard. If you play a J bass, not so much but the J bass will bring out the punch side. Some people here have described GB as GK on roids. There isn't a better amp out there.........uh, for me. Thankfully, for others too. Are there people that don't like it? Sure. So, what GB isn't: * It is not the most "organic" amp out there. If you play only blues or rock, play a four string P bass with a pick, maybe an Ashdown EVO is your amp. Maybe the Ampeg too.* It isn't the most hi-fi amp out there. Euphonics Audio and Epifani are more hi-fi.

Sometimes it seems too colored though. And I play through a Schroeder 1210 which is somewhat dark anyway. Maybe the GBE600 is right where I want to be. Thanks for the help. Maybe I'll look for a used one. I can always get my money back out of it.
Members fealach Posted February 13, 2006 Members Posted February 13, 2006 The GBE600 is very flexible, but to be honest I never used its EQ very much. My basses just all seemed to sound BETTER with it than my previous amps, I found I didn't need to "dial in" a great tone, it was just THERE. I play blues-classic rock with my 4 string, then switch to a 5 for more modern aggressive rock, and all I need to do is hit the bass/mid/bright buttons for a total change in character. In my experience its only weakness is that it isn't the best choice for getting the sound of a cranked up low wattage tube head.
Members mlwarriner Posted February 13, 2006 Members Posted February 13, 2006 i just (finally) got an ampeg fridge to hook up to my GBE1200... all i can say is...wowowowowowowow. very big sound, bigger cleaner and clearer than with my peavey 412tvx. punchy and...whole. very nice combination, IMO.

I'm currently a student at TU, but I originally tried the GB out at a shop back home in Colorado Springs a few years ago.
