Stop me if you've heard this one.

Back when I made my living playing bass, money was tight, and bass strings were expensive. I had heard of people boiling their strings, but I was on the road, and didn't have a kitchen available. However, I did still have to do laundry. So I'd take the strings off of my bass, coil them and stick them inside a sock, then run them through with a load of laundry, washer and then dryer. They came out almost like new, bright, shiny, all grunge gone. Any corrosion or physical damage was still there, of course, so they were never quite like new, but close enough to get by until the next load of laundry. Worked a charm.

wd-40 is not petroleum...  its fish oil...  google is your friend...

Yes it is. https://www.wd40.com/myths-legends-fun-facts/:

Myth: WD-40® contains fish oil.

Fact: Consumers have told us over the years that they have caught some of the biggest fish ever after protecting their fish hooks and lures with WD-40®. We believe this legend came from folks assuming that the product must contain fish oil since it appears to attract fish.  Sorry Charlie®, it just ain’t so.
