Members JimboJ
What is it's purpose? Any why isn't it on regular guitar strings?
Members HORSE
I think you mean the thread that's wrapped around the tip and ball-ends. As far as I know, it is to protect the tuning pegs and bridge from being scraped by the large windings on bass strings.

Members Zebra
It's supposed to prevent slipping and scraping. In reality, I doubt they do anything but raise the price a bit.
Members Rhythmalism
Getting thicker wire to behave and stay in one place can be an adventure. If part of the string starts to unwind, it pretty much keeps going (nothing like almost getting a new set of strings on and having the cut end untwist). Guitar strings aren't immune, but it's easier (and more costly) to destroy a set of bass strings, so it makes sense to wrap the ends in string. Moderators ThudMaker Posted October 26, 2006 Moderators Share Posted October 26, 2006 It's not on the ends of my bass strings. The red doesn't match anyway.
Members DevilRaysFan
I wear them around my waist and bend them around to use like a thong - an "E-String" as a "G-String" ...(unfortunately, it completely covers my miniscule manhood)
Members Narcosynthesis
It is to stop the end of the strings unwinding when you put tension on them and bend them (like as they enter the tuning peg) not all strings have them, I know the set of daddarrio's I have on atm are just plain without the wraps David
