8 ohm won't damage it, but it will be less powerful.

If you use a 4 ohm cabinet you'll usually get the most power from the amp (unless it is capable of driving down to 2 ohm, which is not usual). Running at 8 ohm will approximately halve the power. However, if you buy two 8 ohm cabs and link them up in parallel, the total load will only be 4 ohm, and you will get more power.

So buy an 8 ohm cabinet now, and another one later.
