Members saturn4ever Posted February 21, 2007 Members Posted February 21, 2007 I'd like to start playing bass and I'm looking at getting one of those starter packs. What's the best value for my money?
Members heymelbs Posted February 21, 2007 Members Posted February 21, 2007 What all should be included in the starter pack?
Members Mytola Posted February 21, 2007 Members Posted February 21, 2007 Don't buy a starter pack. Get a deal on some used gear instead.

Here's what I recommended to one of my bass students just starting:http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-GSR200-Bass-with-Gig-Bag-Package?sku=519713
Members saturn4ever Posted February 21, 2007 Author Members Posted February 21, 2007 well I've been playing 6 string for the past 8 years and would like to play a little bass on the side. I'm not really looking for some extremely nice gear.. either. I played a Yamaha bass w/ an amp that distorted nicely at Sam's Club tonight. That pack seemed pretty good but I can't remember the price. I would like the pack to include at least the bass and amp. My budget is pretty cheap on this.. i'm talking like around 300 dollars.
Members beginner01 Posted February 21, 2007 Members Posted February 21, 2007 IMO:Silvertone bass starter pack just an opinion
Members TN.Frank Posted February 21, 2007 Members Posted February 21, 2007 Most starter packs are way under amped. You'd be better off buying something like a Squier bass and then pickin' up a decent amp to go with it. It may cost a bit more but in the long run you'll be happy you did.
Members xbassman Posted February 21, 2007 Members Posted February 21, 2007 For Christmas I bought this one for my daughter.... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-Artcore-Ser-Hollowbody-without-Tremolo?sku=519527 The bass isn't that bad, but the amp really sucks! and the tuner didn't last a month. That said I wish I would have got her one of these. http://www.rondomusic.net/sjb62bk.html That would have left $180 for a practice amp, gig bag and tuner.
Members saturn4ever Posted February 21, 2007 Author Members Posted February 21, 2007 I'm looking at possibly purchasing an Aria Bass on ebay. Most look to be Japanese made and are going in the 200 range. I could then pick up a smaller bass amp locally sometime later. Yeah, most of those packs are pretty horrid. I think I will avoid them then.
Members TN.Frank Posted February 21, 2007 Members Posted February 21, 2007 You can get an Ashdown "Perfect 10" for well under $200, spend around $200 or a bit less on a bass and you'll have something worth practicing with. Heck, I'd work you a good deal on my Demonator if you'd like.
Members Enderz13 Posted February 21, 2007 Members Posted February 21, 2007 the bass alone is worth the price of this package. $299 http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Peavey-?sku=512186

The black one looks great. The main issue with the starter packs is that the amps are only loud enough to use as a practice amp at home, playing along with CDs. One you bring other instruments into the mix, you don't have the volume needed to be heard.

Members justinbass Posted February 21, 2007 Members Posted February 21, 2007 Seriously. I just bought a new bass (Look on page one for the picture thread) and I am also currently upgrading the heck out of my SX P. I currently do not need to buy yet another bass. But man, that is a good looking instrument
