Members The F-Bomb
My understanding is that you don't use an AC adaptor. The item is getting power from your amp, kind of like your iPod charges from your PC. I'm correct on this? Does anyone know how this works?? Do you need a special patch cord or something like that? Thanks
Members Mudbass
Don't worry about it too much. Phantom power is nearly nonexistent on guitar/bass amps anyway.
Members sludgebass69
Most of the time "Phantom power" is used for powering condensor mics from the mixer back to the mic thru the xlr cable.

Members prosigna
My understanding is that you don't use an AC adaptor. What device are you asking about? There are some DIs that run on Phantom. Some headphone amps can run on Phantom. What are you using?
Members The F-Bomb
The ART MP Tube Preamp I'm looking at getting mentions it uses Phantom power and it doesn't come with an adaptor so I was wondering if it'll work with my amp which is an Ampeg BA210
Members boseengineer
Phantom Power was orginally designed to provide polarization voltage to condensor microphones, which need high voltage but virtually no actual power. Hence the de-factor standard of 48 V over 6.8 kOhm (you can draw maybe 7 mA or thereabouts). That's a fairly odd configuration and it can rarely be used for anything else. That's why it's only found on the microhone inputs of mixers. There was an attempt by the AES to change the standard to a much more useful 24V/1.2kOhm which would allow to power a lot more outboard gear and get rid of some wall warts, but it got thwarted by the general conservatism of the industry. That's a shame actually. Nearly all of today's so-called condesor mics (which are in reality permanently polarized eletret mics) would work a lot better with that too. There are some phantom powererd DI boxes on the market but in my opinion, a passive DI box is cheaper and a lot better for most applications. The ART preamp you mentioned, does not run off phatom power, but it can provide phantom power at it's mic input. DON'T DO THAT TO YOUR BASS, it may fry your bass electronics. Members prosigna
That unit sends Phantom out the XLR input. As long as you don't plug the bass into the XLR using a XLR -> 1/4" TS adapter you have nothing to worry about.

Members GrooveMonkey
it is also a Tragically Hip album title You beat me to it! I love those guys. The SansAmp BDDI can use phantom power from a mixer, that's how I use it 90% of the time.
