Members wilki29
So my new p bass is in transit. Im gonna be using it mainly for slap until I get a jazz bass. Would it sound good with flats on it?
Members guitargod0dmw
I think slap sounds like ass with flats. I like a nice and bright tone for slap, and I don't think I'm alone on this...
Moderators Kindness Posted July 31, 2007 Moderators Share Posted July 31, 2007 I hate the sound of flats on any bass other than double basses. Other people prefer flats. Some love both. It definitely can sound very good, but it depends on what you want. My suggestion, get a set of flats and try them out, if you don't like them, put the rounds back on. Members T. Alan Smith
Flats on a P rawk if you want to simply sit in the mix with the least effort. Because flats don't have that 'zing' for me to get off on, they make be groove a bit better sometimes...make me work the instrument more. Yeah, I dig both. They've each got their place. Try 'em. Then try grounds.
Members rpsands
I wouldn't ever string my primary bass with flats, but putting flats on your backup is cool. It's a mellow, easy to play setup. And the strings last for-evar. I've got an old SG p/j I keep around with flats on it for emergencies or backup, and it's got a nice basic sound that always sits in the mix nicely. Members Super Bass
Flats on a P = Good Flats on a P with the intention of playing slap bass = Not good Conclusion - Your bass should have some nice SS or Bright NS Strings.

Members birdboy7007
Flats are awesome, however not for slap. They have their role that they do very well, but slap is not it.
Members Thumper
Friends don't let friends slap flats. They sound awesome on a P-bass or Jazz, though---kinda boring on their own, but they sit nicely in the mix.

I knew there was another reason, aside from your striking good looks, that I like you.
