Members claypoolfan
I'd like to get everyone's opinions on what is the best 4 string going, under a grand(used), for thumbing and hard plucking. Another bass is probably a year down the line for me, but I'd like to know what to keep my eyes open for, just in case, I walk into a deal I can't refuse. Members Perfessor
You can do it on a P bass with rounds. A maple neck would help. Some active pickups would make it have more bite.
Members guitargod0dmw
Stingray! By far, nothing beats that in your face tone they put out. A J bass would be my 2nd choice. Just listen to Flea...need I say more?

Members Funkee1
All of the above will do it. Add to the list a Spector Rebop, which you can get for under a grand, and I can personally vouch for its ability to withstand aggressive play. Members scampi
used mtd kingston, nice sound and a comfy neck with 3/4 string spacing and LOTS of cash left over from that $1,

Members rpsands
My schecter cv-4 was around 400 bucks with its case and shipping. Dialled toward the neck jazz pickup a ways it sounds amazing for slap. The absolute best imho would be an G&L l-2000 tribute with a moses graphite neck upgrade. Members FloydianAnimal
As most have said, Stingray all the way. Not only does it sound good for slap, but it seems to make alot of slap lines easier to play too somehow.
Members Death Hands
for cyypessakes just buy what you like and slap the {censored} out of it.nuff said. Troof. I totally agree. With a little EQing, any bass can be the "best slap bass". Wood wise, go for maplemaplemaple.
