Over the past month and a half since i graduated high school , i've been debating what i want to do in regards to bringing musical instruments with me. I've decided to try and stay with my band at home, so i'll be leaving my rig with my parents. I have a small 50 watt crate practice amp that seems ideal for dorm use, as i can jam with others and even use it as an ipod speaker for times i would need such a thing, but it's small enough to not take up too much space or make my room mate (also a bassist!) want to murder me. I'm only about an hour from home, so if i need something it's not incredibly difficult to come back and get it, but something bothers me about bringing a $1200 bass to a college campus setting. I've planned on purchasing a 5er for quite awhile, so i'm thinking that i'll get a 5er in the $500 range (lookin at Ibanez right now) so i can actually use it for gigs and won't be heartbroken (just thoroughly pissed) if it gets broken/damaged/ or (heaven forbid) stolen at school. I'd like any recommendations for such an instrument, as well as anecdotes, stories, advice, etc on bringing instruments to college. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

If your parents house is only 1 hour away, I'd keep it all there myself. Assume that not one person in the dorm will have even an ounce of respect for your gear, because they won't. Sure they're not expensive, but for the same money you could get some real nice tone from an MTD Kingston 5. If your worried about theft you could always get a rondo jazz for $125ish. My roommate was a drummer so it was sorta interesting to be rhythm section roommates (potential gay porn title!). The only thing is when you are not at your dorm, make sure you put it away in a closet or out of view and lock your damn door. Don't be stupid if you have drunken idiots over and they spot it and want to play it, turn 'em down. Last year a friend of mine (different school, arguably more sketchy) had his dorm room broken into and about $1500 worth of stuff stolen. My laptop alone is worth nearly 3 grand, and if i bring stuff like a bass, amp, mini fridge, TV, stereo, video games, plus film equipment that i may leave lying around my room, it seems like my dorm would be a thief's paradise. Not to mention my roommate's stuff. I'm thinking I might just start off school with my crate amp and my fender electric, that way i can shop around for a bass and hopefully buy used. If i do find myself either needing to practice my band's music or have a bass for jamming purposes immediately, i can either bring mine up as needed or try to work something out borrowing wise. That stuff is very expensive but if I can't use it, then what's the point of having it? I insured everything I own this summer including my laptop so if something happens it'll be covered. Members 82Daion Posted August 5, 2007 Members Share Posted August 5, 2007 I kept the Bongo, the Daion, and my amp setup in my dorm the whole year, and never worried about it too much. I kept the basses in the closet, and no one really knew what the amp was. The whole floor knew that I had them, due to practice/jam sessions, but as long as I kept our door shut/locked while I was out, I felt OK about it.
