Moderators Kindness Posted August 6, 2007 Moderators Share Posted August 6, 2007 In any case, to answer the OP, I prefer mechanical cleaning to chemical cleaning. A rag/t-shirt and some elbow grease for the finish, a toothbrush for the hard to reach spots, some very fine steel wool for unfinished boards, etc. When there are rusted or tarnished portions that I want to address, I use an appropriate metal polish. If a rosewood or ebony board is truly dry (this simply doesn't happen unless you live in super low humidity and/or never play your bass), I'd use real lemon oil. Most of the time when I need to clean and instrument, I disassemble the entire instrument down to the very last screw, wipe down all the parts and build her back up.
