Members hcintroy Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 After years of muddling around with convert guitar amps and direct line, I'm upgrading my bass rig. I have a GK Backline 250 head which I love. I was wondering which speaker cab config gave the best sound. 4x10 or 2x10on top of1x15 Thanks.
Members guitargod0dmw Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 They are both going to sound very similar. I personally run a 4X10 + 1X15 setup, but it's not for everyone. Before I went and spent money on cabs, I'd probably upgrade that head. If you like the GK tone, get a 1001-RB II from RMCaudio...$600 shipped. Add a 4X10 for the time being and you'll be all set for a long time. What is your budget?
Members Crescent Seven Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 I'd be partial to the 4x10 simply because I wouldn't need to haul around 2 cabs all the time. 2x10's and 1x15's don't make great standalone cabs, whereas a 4x10 is useful in all situations. The advantage to the 2 cab setup is that you'll get all the power out of the amp, because your amp isn't incredibly powerful, so you might find yourself cranking it with a single 8ohm cab. You could get a 4ohm 4x10, but then you won't be able to add another cab if you find that you need one. Hope that solves it. C7
Members PaulyWally Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 I was wondering which speaker cab config gave the best sound. It's subjective... and there are many more choices than what you listed. But out of those, I would have to go with the 2x10 + 1x15. Personally, I think I'm going after a 2x10 + 1x12 + 1X12. I think that'll be a nice rig. Portable, and scalable.
Members hcintroy Posted August 10, 2007 Author Members Posted August 10, 2007 Thanks for all the help. With the head I have, I may go 4x10. It says I can hook it up to speakers 8 ohms and above, but not lower. After I make some jack from upcoming gigs, I'll probably upgrade the whole thing. But for now, this will work. Thanks.
Members Rowka Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 The answer is a 2x15. You're welcome.
Members Crescent Seven Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 125W@8ohm Ouch... PUMP UP THE VOLUME!!! I'm running my MAG300 into my 8ohm Sonic 4x10 cab for rehearsals, and I have to dime it, especially when I'm playing my Spector. And that's 180w. I'm going to add my 2x10 to it tonight because this no headroom bull{censored} is giving me blisters on my fingers. C7
Members illidian Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 125W@8ohmOuch... 'Twas about to mention that bit. The best way to run two cabs with that amp is to get a couple four ohm cabs and use them in series. But that requires a special cable and, if you ever upgrade your amp, you'd be in a bit of a sticky situation as the four ohm cabs, typically, run at two ohms which many amps cannot handle. In your situation, go with the 4x10. Of the 8 ohm variety.

Members Adrenochrome Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 If you're happy shifting 2 cabs often I'd suggest 2x10 + 1x15 (which is my current setup). I occasionally use just my 2x10 or 1x15 alone for certain venues but if you've only got 125w with one cab you might be short of power. If you'd rather just use 1 cab (eg if you'll be going through the PA usually), then just a 4ohm 4x10 should cover your needs.
Members guitargod0dmw Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 a 4ohm 4x10 should cover your needs. But his amp will only do 8 ohms...so that's not a good idea.

Members FloydianAnimal Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 I would get a better head first- really, for any versatile cab setup you're going to want at least 4 ohm capability. I run a 2x10 and 1x15 with a SVT3Pro which gives me about 450 watts @ 4 ohms (since the cabs are parallel). I also run a 2x15 and 2x10 setup sometimes- again each cab being 8 ohms with a parallel total of 4 ohms... I like the 10 inch/15 inch combos because I feel they compliment each other tonally and cover a wider frequency range better.

Members boogiebassbill Posted August 10, 2007 Members Posted August 10, 2007 I use ampeg 1x18 and 4x10 both 4 ohm with a 2 ohm head. weighs bout 250 lb

Members hcintroy Posted August 10, 2007 Author Members Posted August 10, 2007 ...that I'm playing in a 4-piece blues band (singer/harp, guitar, drums, and me). So, I don't need a wall of sound, but enough to practice, gig, and get by on for now.

So, I don't need a wall of sound, but enough to practice, gig, and get by on for now. You're never going to get anywhere with that kind of attitude, son! Memorize these following terms and live by them: -More power -More headroom -More speakers -More basses -Total dominance I'm sorry but we can't let you settle for "good enough" when you can have "totally rad" or "absurdly overblown". Let's face it, your guitarist is living this ethos and making you have to buy more gear. Since it's well known and documented that guitar amps don't have volume knobs, it's up to you to buy that gear and make him wish he had just bought that Marshall 4x12 and JCM800 instead of the Hot Rod Deluxe. We inflate your head with G.A.S. because we care. Brother. C7
