Bass Noob technique question!

Hey guys. I have this problem with the low strings ringing out and causing a useless rumble when I play in the higher register. What techniques do you guys use to keep them quiet?

you need to learn how to mute the other strings with your palm.

I rest my thumb on the E string while playing with rest strokes (ending the "pluck" of the string with your finger resting on the string below it) on the A, D and G strings. I'm working on shifting my thumb to the A string when playing the G string. Between that and muting with the left hand, it's getting pretty quiet now .

I use a combination of muting with my palm, my thumb, and my ring and pinky fingers. It takes practice and thought, then it becomes automatic.

Same here. And I'll add with both hands.

 

See if you can play clean 1/8 notes with complete silence to a metronome. You'll get good at it with out even thinking.
