Members mrbassie
Define "real" reggae, though. I mean, UB40 is the biggest steaming pile of horse {censored} to ever come out of anywhere. That's like British Dancehall Reggae, they just happen to be white boys. C7 Actually you are very wrong. You hear what the mainstream feeds you only... and I bet that is Red Red Wine. Can you honestly name one UB40 album or song other than Red Red Wine and Labour of Love? Anyways im not trying to flame but check out their latest album "Who you fighting for". Almost every song on it is incredible. Also check out vintage songs like "Tyler" and "10 in 1".. blah herehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JAL6zZem8Ihttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH0LuBKp63c&mode=related&search=Real reggae is all in the rhythm. Its starts with the drumming. One drop or steppers beat. Lets take the one drop beat for example(as can be heard in both linked ub40 songs). The kick drum AND the snare are hit simultaneously on the 3rd beat. The Reggae "chank" guitar is played on the 2 AND 4 of the beat. People think its on the OFF BEAT but its not. In ska its the offbeat. Also white people... (yes im white) I refer to people with no rhythm: Reggae guitar is played using DOWNSTROKES not upstrokes. Members mrbassie
Maybe you should turn off your radio once in a while... I hated Sublime when they first came out, and now I like them. How is it that you don't have more control over what you hear? Do you hang out at the mall all day? Obviously I'm kidding, but the first question was serious. I only hear them when I want to hear them. It's not that hard, I don't turn on MTV, or TV at all really, and I don't turn on the radio. That way, if a band gets played out, it's my fault. With what they play on TV and the radio these days, I'm not missing much. lastly, if you are sick of 2 chord reggae, then stop playing 2 chord reggae. Play the real thing and it will be harder to get sick of. Well said. And yes a lot of reggae IS 2 chords but there is a lot that is not either Off the top of my head: Concrete jungle and Coming in from the cold by Bob Marley have more than 2 chords. Members mrbassie
So, you're saying white people don't have rhythm? Haha no. I was just using the stereotype as a metaphor Like the movie "White Men Cant Jump" Woody Harrelson was a baller

Members ReggieBoons
Reggae guitar is played using DOWNSTROKES not upstrokes.[/quote] I never thought anyone would figure it out. It's true about white people though. It seems all one sees is some scrub on youtube claiming reggae with soulless, robotic upstrokes. Weakness.... A good, talented and most importantly, soulful white reggae band is Soldiers of Jah Army out of DC.

Members REMUS
I was going to say, white boy reggae is ska and dub step (drum n bass sub-genre). I don't mind ska really, skanking = good exercise lulz Sublime suck imo, but I like stuff such as goldfinger?
Members Westsailor
Wow, the hatred for raggea is sad here...it seems like all of you are the type who want to hear amazing solo's and nothing with a little bit of an exotic touch to it. I don't think anyone is busting reggae/ska as a genre. I certainly won't, I love movin & groovin to some real, honest dub. But white boys playin reggae? I've never heard sublime, maybe they're good. I like UB40 but I never REALLY & truly thought of what they did as true Reggae... I mean, com'on... they're WHITE for god sake! I'm in the Caribbean, in a band. I'm almost obligated to but I refuse. When someone asks for some Marley or Jimmy Cliff I just say 'I'd love to but white folks have no business playin reggae'.
Members REMUS
Color has got {censored} all to do with it. It's like saying black people shouldn't play Black Metal because a bunch of white guys from Newcastle in the UK made it up. You got some white guilt there or something? LAME Music should not be restrained to a class, color or what ever.
Members Westsailor
You're absolutely correct... When I refer to 'white boys' I wasn't referring to the color of their skin. I was referring to the color of what's in their heads. Kinda like hearing some teenage whiz playing some seriously nice blues guitar. He could be top notch and I can easily appreciate/envy his skill but at the same time, in the back of my head I still can't help but be thinking 'WTF can he know about the blues'? Members bholder
I just checked out some Sublime vids on youtube, and frankly, I don't get it - seems like a fair-to-average bar band, nothing all that great. The fawning fanboy comments are quite curious, they seem to think this was the greatest band that ever was. Like I said, I don't get it. The Police did better white boy reggae than these guys ever did.
