SX vs. Squire

RIC N BACKER

I have posted a few threads this past week as I had gotten a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz bass. It is a great bass, well built and all that. I also did a side by side with my SX P bass. while there are better qualities about the Geddy it is not what I need or was really looking for.

what I want is a cheap bass that I could have out on a stand and use when ever I feel like it. something that if it fell over wouldnt really matter. I have my Ric and that stays in its case when not in use. the Kids and the dog know to respect my stuff and I am sure if it was out on a stand it would be alright but I am not taking that chance.

the SX is good for this purpose but I want something else.

I am Bringing the Geddy back. It is a great bass but I already have the Go to great bass...my Ric

so here is where I am at and what I am looking for

Just saw/looked at the

Squire vintage modified Jazz bass....( looks pretty much like the SX SJB-75) except Black block inlays and the SX body actually looks nice in the pictures

SX SJB-75 natural

the one complaint I have with the SX P I have is the sharp frets. the Cheap electronics dont bother me. actually the P/Us dont sound to bad.

how does the Squire rate against a SX SJB-75?

I know these are inexpensive guitars. inexpensive doesnt equal cheap quality.

I am just wondering what the Build quality is between the 2 basses.

The current crop of Squiers is FAR better than any offerings from SX I've ever seen - and especially the VM series... The fretwork on my VM Jazz is very good - as has it been on 4 or 5 others of the same make...

Just remebered you're also in NY - if you want to come to N Syracuse one of the next 3 or 4 wednesday nights, you can meet me at Station 58 and play mine for yourself - or we could set up something else...

You have a VM Jazz?

have you ever had any SX products?

In the specs it states that the body is soft maple. most basses I am looking at are Alder or Ash, which is pretty hard how is a soft Maple body? does it get dings easy?

I forgot you were in Syracuse. I was out there about 2 months ago for some training. I was bored out of my face after work, I should have set something up back then.....

do you live anywhere near Dinosaur bones Restaurant?

Owned one SX PJ fretless, probably played half a dozen fretted models - and yes, I own a VM Jazz... Although it's called "soft" maple, they appear to have a nice finish that offers good ding resistance - I bought mine used, but it looked practically brand new - and after 15 or 20 gigs, it's still looking good....

I live only about 15 minutes outside of Syracuse - including the Dinosaur.... Back in the days before they got their liquer license, I did some light electrical work there to offset a shop bill for the motorcycle shop that used to be upstairs from there, and know the owner pretty well... If you've got plans to come into Syracuse in the future, PM me, and we'll get together.... My main band is playing Station 58 every wednesday in August, 10pm - 2am, if you're interested in coming out for a night... Take care,

I'm also in central NY, and have several SXes.

I haven't looked at any of the recent Squiers, sounds like they've improved drastically, but my earlier experiences with them were so uniformly negative that it'd take quite a bit for me to trust the brand ever again.

The SX quality has also improved quite a bit over the last 7 years, in my opinion.

I will get a hold of you next time I come out. It doesnt look likely for this month and they better hold a class I want before it starts snowing.....I aint going that way in the winter thats for sure.....I like snow and all but you guys get hit with some stupid amounts and the thruway isnt too friendly in those conditions...as I am sure you know.

if you arent playing we can go down to the GC on 5(?) down by the malls and jam on some stuff there

I always thought that the squire was a 12 year old beginner type thing too but they seem to get some good nods around here.

my SX is pretty good for what it is.

I like the looks of the SJB-75 with the cream block inlays and black pickguard.

I need to try a squire

most GC's stocks these?

Most do - but I'd stress that the VM Series seem to have a bit better QC than the rest of the Squiers I've seen - and I'd say they're amazing at that pricepoint...

A year-old Affinity series Squier P my church has isn't even too bad--neck & body--except sharp frets. The electronics already need work. Buzz a lot. That's the cheapest series, too.

I wish they made a Squier VM in a P/J.

Thanks Jazz Ad, I have never consciously looked at the spelling of Squier. I have probably been misspelling it all over this board for years...

I would go VM anyway. the 70's Jazz is what I like to try.

who knows. I am going to GC tomorrow to Bring back the Geddy. I will see what they have . if it doesnt feel that good I will go with the MIM J or SX J bass. I want a cheap bass but not a poor quality one...know what I mean....

The only Squier I have ever owned was an Affinity tele and it had sharp frets, but I remedied that. I have 4 SX basses, none of them have sharp frets. But only 2 of them are SJB's:

I have modified them, but I played them as my mains even before then. I have never played anything in their price range that I liked as well. But I have to admit that I have never played a Squier VM either.

Oh yea, my SJB's have bound necks, so sharp fret ends are highly unlikely anyways. :thu:

Dont get the Squire Vintage Modified 70s Jazz Bass -- It is too nice for what you are wanting -- "keep on the stand and use whenever I like it" & "if it fell over it wouldn't matter"

Stick with your SX . . . put it out there and let's see how it holds up over the long haul (and the long fall . . . to the floor, that is) -- or is it too fine?

Where In The Hell have you regular forumites been that you don't know how nice these VM70sJ basses are? I'm almost embarrassed to go on and on about them like I have. But damn if I'm not still high on mine. Maple maple maple. Nice pickups. Real block inlays. Nice fretwork, and almost-perfect action right out of the box (mine, anyway). Read the reviews. It's the Squier that's not a Squier. Damn.

As for what you want -- there are oodles of cheap but nice basses out there, new and used. Lots can fill the bill, I'd think. What the hell is wrong with your SX for this purpose? Oh yeah, you want something else. How about I sell you my $29 Fullerton Ventura (nm, it's too nice to get rid of). Seriously, just keep your eyes open here on the forum . . . every day someone is raving about this or that bass; you're bound to find your something else. Review all the recent discussions about how cheap basses can be as good as expensive ones, and wood is wood, blah :blah: blah. All that talk made me want to try a dozen different cheap and/or cheap-classic basses than I have, and I have like 2 dozen cheap basses already.

(sorry for the rant; I just got tired of you going on and on about the Geddy, only to find out that you're through with it -- sheesh, give us a break, Ric)
