Members willsellout Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 Yes once again it's about my search for a 5 string. I'm stuck between the following basses:Zon Sonus Stingray 5 HSHamer CruisebassPeavey TL-5+any other 34" 17-18mm spacing 5 string. I'm to the point of obbsession and can't make up my mind. Damn Dan
Moderators Kindness Posted August 14, 2007 Moderators Posted August 14, 2007 Have you played each of them?
Members willsellout Posted August 14, 2007 Author Members Posted August 14, 2007 Have you played each of them? Haven't played the TL-5 or the Hamer. Between the Zon and the HS it's a dead heat. Dan
Moderators Kindness Posted August 14, 2007 Moderators Posted August 14, 2007 Well then it's time to get your hands on the other two. I really like the HS.
Members willsellout Posted August 14, 2007 Author Members Posted August 14, 2007 I really like the HS. I do to..I think it's a phenomenal bass. My problem is that there isn't anywhere near me that carries these basses. Next time I drive two hours to guitar centers I might be able to find one of them. I really hate being in the middle of nowhere:( Dan
Members 82Daion Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 The Hamer (especially with a 2Tek) is nice. Can sound like a great Jazz should, or, with active pickups, can sound like a more aggressive version of same. Kindness' blew away all the vintage Jazzes we played at Chicago Music Exchange. The Zon is a very different beast, but also nice. Much more modern sounding than the Hamer, but still fairly organic, and virtually impervious to climate change-a big plus for you, I think. Plus, the necks feel and set up great. Don't neglect to try a Mod Quantum 5, either. I haven't played the SR5, and the TL5s I've played have been nice, but not Zon/Hamer nice.

I would love to try a quantum. I owned a Modulus Sweetspot for a short time and didn't care for the tone but from what I understand the Quantum's are a different beast altogether. It would also be nice to have a bass that didn't react to climate change so much too. Dan

They're really well-constructed, too. I'd only played Fleas in the past, and hated them-the Quantum is indeed another beast entirely.
Members guitargod0dmw Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 Of the basses you listed, I'd go for the SR5 as well. However, as mentioned...the Modulus Q5 would be a great choice as well. It's not a 34" scale though... From owning both of them, I really don't prefer one over the other...they both get equal playing time and they both sound incredible. The build quality on each is superb as well.
Members fretless Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 SR 5 is one of the best at any price , the Hamer's are kick ass especially with the 2-tek and asymmetrical neck IIRC .
Members fretless Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 oh yeah don't forget about Tobias
Members bassred Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 If I were to have the $$ for an end-all be all 5er I'd have to go betwen a Zon and a Veillette..... but that's after I get a job, and a good one at that.....
Members Thumper Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 Oh, you poor guy... I've played the Cruise and I liked it. The Sonus would be tempting, too.
Members bholder Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 Get one of each. Sell any you don't like.
Members jackcheez Posted August 14, 2007 Members Posted August 14, 2007 All I can add is that the Stingray 5 has the strongest sounding B string out of all the 5s I ever played.

I play a Tribby L2500 in preference to all of them. Of those listed, I'd pick the Ray. A couple of thoughts: The 2-Tek Hamers can be HEAVY! Mine has the SD p'ups and has a darker sound than I expected. Still a nice bass, but not really for me. I could be talked into letting her go, if you're interested. But she's not pristine, so we should definitely talk first. There are some significant differences between the early models of the TL-5's and the later ones. The neck profile was slimmer and the electronics were upgraded on the later models. Unfortunately, I don't know what years the changes occurred.

The G&L I owned I didn't care for two things: The B string and the noisy electronics. Playability was nice and the neck was really comfortable. PM me the details with your Hamer, maybe we can work something out..although I still haven't decided whether I'm going high, medium, or low end on the 5 string yet. Dan

Members bassred Posted August 15, 2007 Members Posted August 15, 2007 if you can get near a Veillette I'd say you'd find a pretty tough competetor. At $3500 it should be, but a beautiful bass!!! felt like butter... I'm starting to cry a little on the inside that I don;t have one...... nah, I like my Schecter Stilitteo Studio 5 just fine! ( I was actually looking to spend $2000+ on my next bass when I came across the Schec, it was love at first play!!!!
Members willsellout Posted August 15, 2007 Author Members Posted August 15, 2007 I'm actually working on a trade for an older SR 5005 Prestige series for the BTB. It has the smaller body and tighter SR string spacing and super comfy neck. We will see, I might not have to spend any extra money at all:D Dan
