Members B-Bottom Posted August 19, 2007 Members Posted August 19, 2007 crusty folk Moving back to Harrisburg from Portland and really want to play hardcore/crust punk on folk instruments. I play the Bouzouki, Banjo, Mandolin, Mountain Dulcimer, Uke, and some other acoustic stringed instruments. Want to form a Green Anarchist crust/folk band using no electric instruments or amplification. Any non electric instrument welcome. I want us to push boundaries. I like to play it hard, fast and intense. Influences, Tragedy, His Hero Is Gone, Crass, Nausea, F-Minus etc. Also with huge emphasis on anti-civ, anti-domestication. Pretty much the only reason I put this up is to see if there was any one out there in PA interested. Get back to me if you want to get together. Revolt is Love http://harrisburg.craigslist.org/muc/400282811.html ugh

Members BEAD Posted August 19, 2007 Members Posted August 19, 2007 crust punk is usually basically fast metal with far, far left leaning lyrics played by militant hippies wearing black. A few good examples of crust bands would include Doom, Nausea, and especially Phobia. There's actually a pretty decent sized, very committed crust scene here. If I go to a Phobia show I can pretty much count on seeing the same 20 people there every time. here's someone's opinion on it:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crust_punk
Members frunobulax Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 DEATH TO FALSE CRUSTPUNK!!!!

Not much on youtube, but they made some tv blooper show... Phobia http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS88noVZrHw MyBassInYourFace would approve. Nausea

Members BEAD Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 I think crust punk is kinda flaky It can be a bit brittle and crunchy as well.
Members Noise... Posted August 20, 2007 Members Posted August 20, 2007 thats what happens when you drink bong water This is the first time I have ever agreed with you on something. It seems to me like some kind of stupid-ass hippie thing. I'm all for individuality and all of that BS, but damn...ANY kind of punk on a banjo and dulcimer? That's a big WTF right there. I thought one of the requirements for punk was excessively loud and distorted electric guitars?

One of my favorite bands consisted of a single guy singing punk songs over a cheapo yamaha sequencer. He couldn't get his CDs reviewed in MaximumRockAndRoll, because he wasn't punk enough. Seemed like a punk guy to me though. It's a total hippie thing, and if you hate all hippie things you won't like it. I think it makes a bit of sense though. Basically, the crust genre is defined more by the audience than by the actual music played. I can think of a few other examples coughHardcorecough of genres like this, but that isn't really the point. This guy is looking for the PA crust scene, and looking to see if any other folks in that scene are interested in making acoustic music. I can think of a few bands that have switched from electric to acoustic music just because it sort of makes sense. If you're against The Establishment, and some sort of anarchist, why plug your 300 watt mass produced amp into an outlet powered by some coal burning power plant while driving a van across the country to sell a mountain of shrink wrapped CDs? Seems a bit hypocritical, eh? It's not your scene, but I don't think it's stupid. It's pretty thoughtful for something so idealistic.

Meh, I typed out a long rant against hippies and all their hypocrisies, and really realized that I don't give a {censored}. If he wants to go and play punk rock on a dulcimer and a banjo, more power to him and his bong-water soaked brain. At least he doesn't want to be the newest pop/emo band on MTV.

I think it's funny how when someone wants to do something slightly original, or is a member of a subculture that hasn't been coopted by mainstream money, folks drop in to and . You're kidding me, right? I play instrumental/experimental/prog and I AGREE with a lot of "hippie" views. However, I see that many claim to be so "environmentally concerned" and against "The Establishment," yet walk around with cell phones, drive cars, swear off meat, but just love their leather jackets. They claim that anyone against them is a "sheep" or something along those lines, and yet they follow the whole "hippie" trend, which in itself is just another herd of sheep. I also find it funny that when someone dares to question their views, or makes a joke, immediately they rise to the defensive and act like they're being persecuted by some "narrowminded" person. I'm all for new ideas in music. That's why I play the type of music that I do. I hate 99% of what gets aired on Fuse/MTV/VH1/Etc. Something different is a breath of fresh air IMO. However, when someone acts as if they're going all acoustic to "save the environment" yet advertise it on a computer that's sucking power from the wall, it seems hypocritical to me. I just want to make this clear; I don't have anything against an original idea. But, in my opinion, playing acoustic punk so that you can play the environmental martyr card is FAR from original.

Boy am I out of the loop At this point, whenever I hear about a new genre with a silly name and seemingly no point, I assume it's the now hugest thing out there, and begin looking for ways to exploit it.
