Members Bob O'Brian Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 The gf wants to get a dog when we move into our new house, but I've already got a cockatiel who spends most of the day flying around the house (she's on my shoulder at the moment, for example). I'm worried that a dog would not be able to resist taking a swipe at the bird, the gf thinks I'm talking rubbish and that if properly trained a dog would leave the bird well alone. Any of you guys mixed these two creatures in the same household? What breeds of dog might be better in this regard?
Members burdizzos Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 Yes, dogs eat birds. I don't know of any breed that will not take a shot at the bird. If you get a puppy, there's a good chance that you could train it to not try to eat the bird. Dogs and cats live together all of the time. My dogs hate cats and will do whatever it takes to get to one if spotted. However, we had a cat in the house with the dogs and never had a problem.
Members guitargod0dmw Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 I would think that a puppy can be trained not to eat the bird. Personally...I would train it TO eat the bird though. My fathers GF has a African Grey Parrot...I HATE IT! There is bird {censored} all over the entire house from where it walks around. She never cleans it up either...and I'm not sure why either one of them is ok living in feces all of the time. It eats the couch too...so a really nice couch is now covered in bird {censored} and rips from his stupid beak. It's pissing me off just thinking about it... And then there is the whole bird noises thing. At 4am... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Members Svi Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 My friend has two parakeets and a cockatoo-she also had two dobies and a german shephard at the same time. She made it work. Like others said, if you get a pup you can probably train it (may I suggest that you adopt a pup instead of purchasing one from a pet store?). Good luck~
Members burdizzos Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 My Boxer/Pit ran full speed into a shrub to snag a bird that was apparently mocking him. He then ran up to the deck with the bird's feet sticking out of the front of his mouth. My wife yelled at him, he opened his mouth and the bird flew away. I really wish I had video of that.
Members jasper383 Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 This thread would be shorter if you asked, "what won't dogs eat?"
Members skatalite Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 My dog has killed at least three birds in the nearly two years he's been alive. He didn't attack them, he just tried playing with them. I guess he hit them too hard?

I wish you had a video too, sounds hilarious!

Members D Aussie Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 Birds are made of meat.Dogs eat meat.therefore.dogs eat birds ever heard the expression a fox amongst the chickens?
Members sludgebass69 Posted August 23, 2007 Members Posted August 23, 2007 Sounds like an excellent reason to get a dog.

My dogs hate cats and will do whatever it takes to get to one if spotted. However, we had a cat in the house with the dogs and never had a problem. I had a great German Shepherd and a male cockatiel. They got along quite well. In fact, the male used to chew on my dogs' nails and walk around on his back and neck. This GS wasn't exactly a lay back dog though. He was a gamer but he was trained to go easy with the home boy.
Members Bob O'Brian Posted August 24, 2007 Author Members Posted August 24, 2007 Well we had been thinking of re-homing an adult dog from a rescue centre, but maybe this is the kind of thing that needs to be trained for from when it's a puppy? Glad to see at least onr person (hawkhuff) has had success with this

Glad to see at least onr person (hawkhuff) has had success with this You can find an adult dog that won't eat your bird. Just try to get one that is temperament tested or something. For example, we have a german sheperd that chases our cat whenever she sees it. However, we have a lab that has never shown any interest in the cat whatsoever. The lab, though, has tried to eat a squirrel, while the GS has shown little interest in squirrels. Different dogs do different things.
Members Psilocybin Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 Hence the term "bird dog". I once saw my dad's German Shorthair swallow a robin whole. I was shocked, then I was impressed.
Members Billystrat Posted August 24, 2007 Members Posted August 24, 2007 My dog is part greyhound and used to enjoy chasing birds, and then bringing them back to me in her mouth. I was able to salvage a few by keeping them in a shoe box with some grass, seeds and water for a couple days, but yeah generally dogs don't get along with birds.
Members DaveAronow Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 If by "bird" you really mean "chicken" or turkey", and by "dog", you really mean "me",............................ then yes.....................they do!

Adopt a dog, do not support those bastards that sell animals. Millions of animals are put to sleep every year in shelters, while waiting for a home.
Members FamousGuy Posted August 25, 2007 Members Posted August 25, 2007 my ex girlfriend's dog caught a bird in mid flight(flew way too close to it) and killed it at a dog park
