Members Jamacuco Posted August 26, 2007 Members Posted August 26, 2007 I am currently looking forward replacing the bridge pickup on my custom Aerodyne. Currently it is a Fralin single coil and it hums like a mo'fo'. I am going to shield the cavities better but I was thinking of having it replaced with one of these options: SD Basslines HOT stackSD Basslines CLASSIC stack Both these are humbuckers on a single coil housing. Has anyone experience with these. Any noticeable differences?
Members Thumper Posted August 26, 2007 Members Posted August 26, 2007 I've got an STK-J1 classic in the bridge position of my Franken-P/J. It sounds like my '62 Jazz reissue without the hum. If you're looking for vintage growl, go for it.
Members Bigfiddle Posted August 26, 2007 Members Posted August 26, 2007 I use the STK-J2 Hot Stacks. http://www.bestbassgear.com/basslines-pickups-stkj2.htm

The Bartolini is cheaper and a feasible option I hadn't considered...
Members Jamacuco Posted August 28, 2007 Author Members Posted August 28, 2007 BUMP! Also I was looking at the Rio Grande Muy Grande neck PU. Is it a humbucking PU in a jazzbass style housing? Specs didn't say a thing in their website...

The Bartolini is cheaper and a feasible option I hadn't considered... i am not quite up to date with barts..i understand they now do active pupslet me see...** this one beats this one looking at it it seems to be the same design as the 9J4 i had...and if its correctly sized..as it says for the bridge then it should match rout ok.. the split coil is noiseless and my 9J's were very smooth and not too middlei see this one has low characteristics which should be better on a bridge pup as the sound can be thin and bright there.. worth a try i guess...and i would use barts again..although my caveat is use an active eq...as i think your aerodyne has to bring out some strong signali think most luthiers using barts have active eq on board..which also of course is a slight preamp as well.. cheers
Members Jamacuco Posted August 29, 2007 Author Members Posted August 29, 2007 Thanks for the heads up on Catalina guitars Mr. Crow! Much appreciated! I am still hesitating about the bartolini pickup. I want the bass to remain passive . If I am going to need a preamp to get the juice out of the bartolini then it is not my cup of coffee. The P pickup is a Fralin and it has a great tone and character in passive mode. I'd like the neck PU to be the same way: lots of passive tone juice.
