Ok, my VM Squire Jazz bass didn't sell on Ebay (I'm kinda happy to be honest I do like it a lot), but I have a 62 JBass coming too (long story)..

I don't need 2 JBs...

Should I 'fretless' it? nice maple neck, black blocks, fretless.. How would it be on a maple neck? What do I need to do to it, just pull the frets, sand and fill slots?

It is harder to defret a maple neck because the fingerboard is finished. When you pull the frets, you will crack the finish and leave exposed maple where the frets once were. Exposed maple turns green and nasty. In order to do it right, you'd have to pull the frets and then sand the finish from the fingerboard and completely refinish the fingerboard. That is a lot of work.

The finish on these is pretty thin though and I was going to 'nitro' the neck anyway.. But am I right in understanding the fretboard normally needs some pretty heavy duty epoxy or something after being defretted?

PS, your bass setup stuff is bloody brilliant, thanks for that!

didn't you just get the Squier?

Yah.. I bought it, then almost the next day I was offered an American Vintage 62 Jazz at a really really great price..

Tried the Squier on Ebay, no takers.. so.... maybe...
