Members Mr.Mow Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 Ok, my VM Squire Jazz bass didn't sell on Ebay (I'm kinda happy to be honest I do like it a lot), but I have a 62 JBass coming too (long story).. I don't need 2 JBs... Should I 'fretless' it? nice maple neck, black blocks, fretless.. How would it be on a maple neck? What do I need to do to it, just pull the frets, sand and fill slots?
Moderators Kindness Posted August 31, 2007 Moderators Posted August 31, 2007 It is harder to defret a maple neck because the fingerboard is finished. When you pull the frets, you will crack the finish and leave exposed maple where the frets once were. Exposed maple turns green and nasty. In order to do it right, you'd have to pull the frets and then sand the finish from the fingerboard and completely refinish the fingerboard. That is a lot of work.

The finish on these is pretty thin though and I was going to 'nitro' the neck anyway.. But am I right in understanding the fretboard normally needs some pretty heavy duty epoxy or something after being defretted? PS, your bass setup stuff is bloody brilliant, thanks for that!

Members GRANKOR Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 didn't you just get the Squier?
Members Mr.Mow Posted August 31, 2007 Author Members Posted August 31, 2007 didn't you just get the Squier? Yah.. I bought it, then almost the next day I was offered an American Vintage 62 Jazz at a really really great price.. Tried the Squier on Ebay, no takers.. so.... maybe...
Members lyricpoet Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 You are getting a 1962 Jazz bass for a really good price? $20,000.00?

Members HumptyThumpty Posted August 31, 2007 Members Posted August 31, 2007 Why don't you just buy the fretless version of that Squire series?
