Not Aston Kuycher Punked, and not Prison- rape Punked either!!!!!

No, i played a gig with a Jazz and blues singer I have worked with for aout 10 years. We played at a big outdoor festival, and the drummer sucked!!!!

He had never worked with her before, but he did an adequate job of holding down the groove. She seemed to be happy with him, even though I was struggling. The guy sounded like a reall good Middle school drummer!!!

So anyway, we go to do the closing number, where swhe introduces us, and lets everyone take a solo. I start my solo, and iy's going well, when suddenly, homeboy reverses the beat!!!!:mad::mad:

The pocket collapsed, and so I'm out there with everyone's eyes on me.....

#1 - that sucks.

#2 - what does "reverse the beat" mean? I'm fairly fluent in music terminology, but I haven't heard that one.

He put the kick drum on 2 and 4 and the snare on 1 and 3, when previously, it had been the other way around.

As long as it was unexpected and did nothing to cement the song, we call that "Jazz". :D

Listen to the Allman Brothers 'One way out, when the whole band comes bak in after the slide solo, the drummer (or sombody) is off and the beat is reversed.... They pull it ff, though, but any band that plays it true to the original live would be laughed at...by me a least......

My first experience with 'turn the beat around' was a positive thing. I was a disco hit song. (Here's some happy lady dancing to the original.)

Then, Reggae has been described as having turned the beat around: accenting 2 & 4 instead of 1 & 3.

Finally, I thought someone was giving me a compliment by saying, "I thought you were about to turn the beat around." He was really saying that he thought I'd lost the 1 and was about to put it somewhere else--as opposed to just being lost and knowing where to wait for the 1.

Is there a true, technical definition for turning the beat around?

(Seems that the definition was posted whilst I was typing my question)
