There is something to be learned when you find that you have nothing good to say about anyone else.

As for the review, I trust you guys more than a paid review (and that's not saying much! :p). Sure he loved it, but just like the Laklands he's reviewed before, I wouldn't be surprised if he "just has to buy one," then realizes it's just not for him and has to sell it again. He's a great player that has provided me some useful playing tips, but I am so sick of professional reviews being so much hype.

That's a spot-on review, IMO.

Chris, why ya reading reviews of a bass ya already got (more or less) ?
:D

Oh it came to me in a the Bass Emporium newsletter that I signed up for to get into a drawing for a 55-02.

I just thought folks might like to read it. I am so digging 44-02. This past weekend I had a gig on Saturday night and Saturday morning I woke up with an insane sinus head cold....snot flying every which way...

anyway I called a friend to help me with the gig...I'd just play acoustic guitar on a 4-5 songs and he could cover the bass chair. I had him bring his rig since I thought he was going to play bass...

So I get there and he says, well I haven't really been shedding very much so I don't know most of the songs....

I ended playing bass the whole gig except for the 4-5 songs I played acoustic on....(let's hear it for adrenaline)

And I had to use his old american jazz and a svt rig....HATED IT....

that thing was like flogging a tired old mare.....man I was never so glad to get back on my 44-02 Sunday morning...and sounded like dog compared to the 44-02. I especially noticed the string to string balance, sustain, and fz. spectrum...

I just can't say enough....that 44-02 is the best damn guitar I have ever played...by a loooong way..!

I'm not worthy....:D

You are. Every bass player deserves a Lakland or two or three or...

Of course I was shamelessly fishing for compliments by using the classic self-deprecation/just kidding combo...

I, of all, am so worthy of this guitar....and several more. If they made an unlined fretless I'd be on a myspace page with a "will_______for cash" sign and a 1-800 number...:D

You know they will make you one if you ask, right?

Yeah, when last I inquired about an unlined 55-02, I was told that it wasn't an option anymore, due to the fact that the 55-02 had been seriously hurting the 55-94 sales, which also led to them slashing options as well. Not sure if it's the absolute reason, but it was pretty logical rationale.

That said, unlined or no, my fretless 55-02 is the best fretless I've played. Period. If I can get the wife onboard, I'm getting a fretted version.

I often wonder if these magazine gear reviewers have the companies shoot their loads all over their faces, or if they actually swallow it.

they do often seem a little too positive.

One exception I have seen is that Greg Orwell or Olwell (or something similar) from Bass Player...he usually seems to point on cons as well as pros. Bill Leigh's reviews might be the most slanted I have ever read...even a pedal that breaks gets a glowing review.

Jon Herrera (again ...I don't know spelling) seems pretty decent as well and he can actually write.

I like reading reviews and really would love to see a 'year end in Reviews' special edition with extended reviews and feedback from the manufacturer...but only if the reviewers were willing to point out shortcomings. I think it could be a great read and source of info.

What I find to be most lacking is comparisons between instruments. Even in shootouts, most comments are directed only in the context of the single instrument being reviewed in that paragraph. In the end I just end up using reviews to find out specs, which are mostly already disclosed on the manufacturer's website.

I think the Bass Player reviews are all out of whack. I had a subscription for a year and not once did they give something a negative review. They even tried to spin the Wishbass review into something positive, for pete's sake.

I do think it depends on the reviewer...here is a segment of one from the guy I was talking about. I would say it is pretty honest and not too glowing.

His review reads like an advertisement. Like the wording was supposed to impress people. I'm sure they're great basses but the impressions given by forumites are far more down to earth and readable.

To their credit, every time I've had the opportunity to play something BP has reviewed, I find the impressions to be spot on. And what manufacturer is going to allow them to run a blatantly negative review? They get sent kewl stuff (when's the last time you played a Ritter? Or a Glockenclang (sp?) rig?) and the reviews show it. They don't generally review Behringer combo's or squire bass packs.

This review in particular was quite good, and I enjoyed the audio clips.
