Members BlueEcho811 Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 Inspired by a post on another thread... here is the question: Can you play this without a pick?
Members Mytola Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 Of course, why should I need to use a pick?
Members i_wanna_les_paul Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 As a drummer? Yes. As a bass player? I don't care enough to find out.
Members BlueEcho811 Posted September 9, 2007 Author Members Posted September 9, 2007 Of course, why should I need to use a pick? Well of the people I've seen not many can nail it without a pick. Just seeing where I and others stand in our speed I guess.
Members Mytola Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 Well of the people I've seen not many can nail it without a pick. Just seeing where I and others stand in our speed I guess. Fingerstyle is quite a bit faster than picking style though.
Members collinwho Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 Fingerstyle is quite a bit faster than picking style though. yeah. 2-4 moving plectrums allows for much more speed than 1.
Members BlueEcho811 Posted September 9, 2007 Author Members Posted September 9, 2007 Fingerstyle is quite a bit faster than picking style though. I dunno, I've never played with a pick except for just messing around. I figured people used it for speed they couldn't get w/ fingers. Why the hell use a pick at all then?
Members birdboy7007 Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 Pfft thats not even that fast at all. I play it fingerstyle often.

Playing with a pick tends to give you a pretty specific biting tone, that cuts through quite nicely. I don't play with a pick often, but when the song calls for it, it can be a good tool.
Members Mytola Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 Why the hell use a pick at all then? Well, because of personal preference, or sound.
Members FloydianAnimal Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 Well, because of personal preference, or sound. Try playing this with a pick Good God man!
Members Jazz Ad Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 Hysteria is much easier to play with fingers.I agree that most of the time fingers are faster. Some pick songs are quite challenging to play with fingers though, and a great exercise most of the time.Try When you're done, try this.

Actually I used to be able to play Maxwell Murder with my fingers, I've forgotten most of it though as I havent played it in years...lol Try play some of the old Operation Ivy stuff...damn thats fast... I agree about the RHCP song though, you just couldnt get that kinda attack with your fingers. I prefer to go between fingers and picks, sometimes songs dont sound right with one so I'll go for the other and it'll sit right.
Members bassred Posted September 9, 2007 Members Posted September 9, 2007 That guy in the Muse clip is playing with his fingers, so why would you need to use a pick for it? I mostly use a pick for the tone, not the speed..... I've got three fingers I can work with on my right hand.....
Members FreestyleIntruder Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 No, but then I can't play it with a pick either, because I don't know it, and in order to learn it I would have to listen to it, which I'm not going to do because I can't {censored}ing stand Muse I can play this without a pick though
Members hasbeen Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 Yes....with one finger. Where do I pick up my prize? There is a prize isn't there?
Members bassdudeguy Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 i find a lot of punk stuff is jsut easier with a pick then fingers, but i have like 5 months of fingerstyle and 2 and a half years of only pick so meh
Members Azz301 Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 Easily played w/o a pick.... damn... With that said, I'm actually going back to pick playing with my band. Mainly because it makes it easier to stop the Thunderbird neck-diving with a whole forearm resting on the back of it, rather than just my thumb pushing down on the side of the neck pickup. This should change when I get another 4-stringer that likes Drop-C tuning just as much (or more??) and doesn't neck dive. I've had to change my pick-style to accomodate some of the slap parts I'd previously written too. Its a mediocre substitute for slapping... but I still do the pops with my middle, and ring, fingers. Now my right hand doesn't cramp up after playing for half an hour holding the neck up!!
Members 88persuader Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 Not a problem! ... But then again I'm a long time finger player, I'm no beginner. Some players use a pick so if you're covering their tune and want to sound more like the recording using a pick makes sense but personally if I need more SPEED I use more fingers. I normally use 2 or 3 fingers to pluck the strings and frankly haven't been faced with a tune that couldn't be played that way yet. So IMO using a pick is a decision I'd make for the SOUND it gives more then any speed it provides. ........ I guess if I had to play machine gun notes on a single string a pick might be easier ... but that example tune doesn't qualify and the bass player is using his fingers so pick tone isn't an issue.
Members WynnD Posted September 10, 2007 Members Posted September 10, 2007 I find picks to make bass more percussive. Think that might help this song, but I wouldn't play it that way. (Don't really pick a bass very well. I'm not a converted guitarist.)
