Members willsellout Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 This is pretty killer. I just got back from a week in Atoria and unpacked and set it up. The layout is a lot different as far as the online stuff is concerned. The internet browser does't take up the whole screen like I'm used to, not sure if that's something I can fix or not. But i signed up for a trial of .Mac and have wifi and an email addy. So far I'm digging the hell out of it. Thanks for all the recommendations folks! Dan
Members Emprov Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 Excellent! There's a Macbook Pro in my not too distant future. I was down at the Apple Store checking them out yesterday. I'm still in G4 land, gotta change that soon. Hey, any idea on what they're going to do about people who buy now and miss out on 10.5?
Members skatalite Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 You can resize the browser window. I assume you're using Safari, the default browser? If so, props to you, excellent browser. Now, to resize it, grab the bottom right hand corner and tug! Also, for some fun, go into your System Preferences and mess with Dashboard and Expose It makes everything more efficient.

I know one thing..you won't like it when I lay the MacSmackdown on yo ass!! Hey how does this whole wifi thing work? I'm connected to the internet but I'm not sure how....is that bad? Dan

I'm connected to the internet but I'm not sure how....is that bad?Dan You have a wireless Internet card built into your computer. If it's on and there's a Wi-Fi signal it can pick up and connect to, then you're rolling. Even though your home may not have Wi-Fi, your neighbor might and theirs might not be password protected, which in case you can "steal" their signal. Or if you're currently at a Starbucks, Borders, etc.; someplace considered a Wi-Fi hotspot, you can use it there, too.

Yeah when I turned it on to set it up it gave me four options for wireless internet connectivity. The first one didn't work, the second one needed a password and the third one (linksys) hooked me up. So it should automatically detect a wirelss network and connect to it whenever it can? I also bought the USB port for the phone line connection just in case. dan

Members willsellout Posted September 14, 2007 Author Members Posted September 14, 2007 Basically yes It's smart. It's nice sitting on my couch browsing the internet. I really am amazed at how fast the wireless internet is. It's about as fast as my cable modem surfing. Very very cool! Dan

Members sunburstbasser Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 As far as browsers go, I use Firefox on my Mac mostly because there are sites that don't support Safari, but very few that don't support Firefox (at least that I visit!). I would also recommend downloading Sidetrack for your Apple laptops. Turns your one-button track pad into a pad with multiple mouse buttons, scroll bars, and lots of other hip options. And using the scroll bars on a track pad sure beats arrow keys and dragging the scroll bar!
Members willsellout Posted September 14, 2007 Author Members Posted September 14, 2007 So it turns out that the hotspot in my house is in the kitchen. Everything slows down on the couch. The more I dig the more I like this little notebook. Oh it looks like I have a hotspot on my couch as well as long as I'm on the right side:D Dan
Members bassesofalessergod Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 i use firefox on my macbook as well.
Members mrcrow Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 i use firefox too...this thing about going around with a notebook and picking up signals...what does it costi think i could put this on the new laptop i am evisaging getting...i see you can plug in as well...i assume thats just at home

You can right-click by tapping two fingers at once on the trackpad as well.

Apple will make you pay full price, just like everyone else. The only time Apple starts offering free* upgrades is when the official release date is announced. * Upgrade is free but you'll pay $19.95 s/h to get your free upgrade box.

In Michigan, folks have been arrested and charged with felony computer crime just for unauthorized access to a wireless network. It's the whole "Front Door was unlocked, so I walked into the house and helped myself" issue. I personally leave mine open and unlocked so neighbors can connect, but that's my choice. If I didn't know it was open and folks were connecting and using my service, I might feel different about it.

Not only can they get to your bandwidth, if you have shared folders on your PC they can get to them also (viruses). And if your neighbor uploads 2000 songs to a P2P network and the FBI shows up, it will be at your door and on your IP address... Just something to keep in mind...

Also, porn of the "younger than normal" variety, email threats, hacking attempts from drive by wifi users, and using your access to send massive amounts of spam. On my open wireless, I have massive filtering that only allows web traffic. http://www.nocat.net

Members sludgebass69 Posted September 14, 2007 Members Posted September 14, 2007 I didn't. And I can't get it to work. I think it's only on the intel based macbooks, but it should be somewhere in the mouse/trackpad settings.....
