Computer issues, and other things breaking

Users are the issue much more often than hardware.

In this case we have a computer running on a "copy" that never got updated or maintained.

He also mentioned that his computer was acting screwy before he attempted a re-installation of the OS. If a hardware malfunction is the cause of the original problem then it's no surprise that Windows won't install.

Try reinstalling Windows again, and delete ALL of your hard drive partitions when it asks you to. I'm kinda knowledgeable on PC's (I've built several from the ground up) but I do better if I'm the one working on them than I do trying to explain to someone on the 'net. I can still try to help. LMK if you have any questions. I've used a "copy" of WinXP Pro SP2 on all of them with no problems.

There is also a program called bootdisk you can download for free that I think will check your hardware straight from the BIOS without any windows install. It will also completely wipe out your hard-drive by writing zero's to the drive so it's similar to a new hard drive.
