Members lyricpoet Posted September 21, 2007 Members Posted September 21, 2007 I know that the SX bass line has been discussed countless times here, but I was unaware and didn't pay attention. I haven't pulled the trigger (as I was given another day from MF) on a Epi T-Bird for $279. Now I see this SX '62 jazz clone complete with pick up covers in a beautiful shade of green. Yes to inexpensive basses. {censored} Alembic- I owned their SC deluxe and it was in the shop like an old Jaguar or Porche- way too much. Opinions, please. For $139, do I get a decent bass?
Members Jugghaid Posted September 21, 2007 Members Posted September 21, 2007 Decent, yes. Probably about the same level of quality as a MIM Jazz IMO.
Members Gaui Posted September 21, 2007 Members Posted September 21, 2007 Yup Give it a setup and swap out the pots and you have good solid bass.
Members lyricpoet Posted September 21, 2007 Author Members Posted September 21, 2007 'nuff said. Thanks to all!
Members Darkstorm Posted September 21, 2007 Members Posted September 21, 2007 I'd say nope, not decent. Poor fretwork, poor hardware, poor pups, poor electronics. Much better basses available right out of the box in the low budget price range by makers like ESP Ltd, Ibanez, & Peavey.

Members jasper383 Posted September 22, 2007 Members Posted September 22, 2007 I wouldn't put them up with MIMs; but rather the new Squiers. Very nice for the money. Lots of very good basses out there today for less than $500.
Members Billystrat Posted September 22, 2007 Members Posted September 22, 2007 They have their short comings, but you'll probably overlook a fair amount of them when you gig out with a rock solid bass that only set you back $100. Right out of the box new strings, pots, cap and input jack will get it in the ballpark of a more expensive bass.

I returned a Fender Geddy Lee and bought a 75 SX Jazz I am very happy with the SX
Members lyricpoet Posted September 22, 2007 Author Members Posted September 22, 2007 Again, thanks to all- this bass is a '62 copy in seafoem green complete with both pickup covers! I haven't read one bad review- even in the H-C Reviews! SX-SJB-62C VGN Green $139 Epi T-Bird IV Reverse $279 Total= $418 I'm never buying another bass for more han $400 again. Once upon a time I had $62,000.00+ in basses! Uninsured, for Lamb's sakes! From Alembic to Zon- go {censored} yourselves!
Members Noise... Posted September 22, 2007 Members Posted September 22, 2007 Meh. I went with a Squier Vintage Modified '70s Jazz and couldn't be happier with it. Easily MIM Fender quality stock. I can't speak for the SX basses, as I don't have one and haven't played one. When I was shopping for a bass I looked into them extensively and most people recommended modding them - which wasn't something I really wanted to do, so I went with the Squier.

I have an SX P and must say the construction and playability rivals any MIM Fender I've played. I've owned quite a number of MIM Fenders, too. I'll never buy another MIM Fender again as long as SX continues to keep up the good work. Also, I'd like another P. The cheapest I can get a MIM Fender P is $350 used. A new SX P is $109, sounds just as good, plays just as well and the price allows me more than $200 in savings for random things. Perhaps a hardshell case? How about some new pups? Or, spend $30 and replace the strings, pots and jack. Whatever the case might be, SX has won my heart. My drummer has a '60s jazz SX that's super sexy, too
Members 82Daion Posted September 22, 2007 Members Posted September 22, 2007 From Alembic to Zon- go {censored} yourselves! Hey, whatever does it for you. That said, the SX is a decent bass, and you won't be disappointed with it.

Yeah, I've heard this from many posters at a variety of sites- strings are a given (going with half-rounds); pots I can handle myself. But a new input jack ? And a cap- cap to what? Now we're talking a trip to my local luthier (now a $200 bass-still very much OK) How about just the strings and pots? I saw on this bass (which is very new to their line) that they're strung with D'Addario's- no idea what. Here's the link: http://www.rondomusic.com/product1260.html

(Not even at $139) Buy the Fender.

I fell in love with that bass the moment I saw it. I'm buying one. For 139 how could you go wrong? From the previous posts, you should have been payinmg attention (wagging finger in your face), you can add mods to your hearts delight. The pots and jack are 5 bucks, bridge 40-90, pups 80-100. Others have said theirs was good to go right out of the box. You can choose. That's if you like project basses. I like to do that {censored} and I would never take it to a luthier but that's me. I would get a MIM or MIA used Fender then you won't need mods unless you want them.

I just printed out the lacemusic page (pdf). Note: if you go to my link it says that the strings are D'Addario's- are these Rondo in brand name only subbed out to D'Addario?
Members Fran da Man Posted September 22, 2007 Members Posted September 22, 2007 I would think they are regular D'addario strings as they also sell them.http://www.rondomusic.com/accessories.html
Members james on bass Posted September 22, 2007 Members Posted September 22, 2007 I've had a few SX and I like them. Have never had a problem with bad necks, frets etc... I really like the one you are choosing as well. With the Canadian $ at par with the greenback, I may just have to order some more gear very shortly. If you can solder in new pots, you can very easily do a pot and jack while you're in there.
Members lyricpoet Posted September 22, 2007 Author Members Posted September 22, 2007 Hey, whatever does it for you. That said, the SX is a decent bass, and you won't be disappointed with it. When I say that it's more of an emotional release, and certainly not aimed at you or other Alembic players here. I liked my SC deluxe, but didn't love it. And I got a good deal on it too. $3000 almost new, basically very little use and no gigging- this rich kid in NYC after spec'ing the thing to death suddenly now wanted the Mark King with a 34" scale:confused:. Oh to have unlimited funds! During around 1997-2003, I was making huge $$ running a construction company in Boston; and, although recently divorced, I only had to pay $150/week in child support (my ex is one of the top dawgs at Staples world HQ in Framingham). I had so much expendible cash that I bought any bass that tickled my insane fancy. BTW, as a future teacher (again) getting my Masters in Latin/Greek, they'd have to pay me around $750K to do that job again. I got addicted to drugs and basically lost my mind from the pressure. Sorry, why am I rambling on about this?...oh yeah, with the Chicago cable testers put to bed (I hope:rolleyes:), I'd love to do an A/B/X test on J basses only. Logistically it would be tough- the player would have to be the same guy, behind a curtain, playing the same thing over and over. And maybe blindfold him? Example: a Lakland MIA 55-94 and the Skyline equivalent:)
