I played last night's show using my Galaxy AS-1000 IEM setup with Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 EB earphones.

It was awesome! Once I got it dialed in, I could hear everything clearly.

I ran the mono out off of my mixer, which is identical to the L/R Main outs, so I was hearing exactly what the audience was hearing. It really made singing a hell of a lot easier because I could hear exactly how my voice was sitting in the mix.

During the first song, apparently my guitarist was way too loud, big surprise eh? But he was turned down on the board and thanks to the isolating earbuds, I just heard what was out front. I had no idea he was too loud and I was standing four feet from his amp.

I am very satisfied. My ears are also very pleased because I was able to maintain a level that will not damage them.

I Like IEM's as long as there is a good mix. and I can hear my insturment clearly.

they are good for eleminating a lot of feedback and reverberation through the mics as well.:thu:

Can I ask how much you have invested there, and if everyone on stage was using them?

It cost me $440 to find out if I like them. That's why I held off for so long.

The stock earbuds are crap. I got a set of Ultimate Ears super.fi 5 EBs based on a few recommendations, they work brilliantly and sound exceptional.

It will cost each of my bandmates $200 for a receiver to use on the existing transmitter and then additional cost for earbuds if the choose.

So, for a four piece band it would cost around $950 for the rig and then additional cost for earbud upgrades.

A quality monitor system will cost at least that much.

Good stuff. I've aways wondered about those things. Now that I'm singing lead, I should look into it a bit more.

I just played a festival gig where I couldn't hear anything. I sang the whole show completely deaf to myself and good god do I ever go off pitch when I cant hear myself! Yikes!

Only planning on using one transmitter then, I take it. I assume the Galaxy transmitter can send two seperate mono mixes?

I don't think it can. One mix is plenty if everything can be heard clearly.

Ideally, everyone would have their one monitor mix and transmitter, but that's some serious coin.

I'd check. The Shure system can send one stereo or two mono (still in both ears).

It's only got one XLR input.

I'll check the manual.

I'm not too worried about it because I don't see the guys in my band dropping the cash on IEMs any time soon. There's a reason that I own everything that's in my trailer.

Same here.. I've started doing a lot of lead singing this past year (up to 22 songs now) and not having any monitor I've been singing on pure faith. Not so much if I'm off key but have no idea how I sit in the mix. There is just no room on the 'stage' for monitors... dancers already knock our mic stands around so IEM's might be useful.

To be honest tho, I do think not being able to hear myself helped me get over the butterflies of singing lead :)

Hmm... now you got me thinking. Problem is, I know nothing about IEM's.

What are the things to consider in selecting an IEM... i.e. what features are important and what is not. I mean, aside from the obvious: fit/comfort, wireless vs wired, etc.

For example, takeout mentioned having a limiter (I'd never have thought of that).

How important is fidelity? Stereo vs mono?

Any place to go to read up on them?

You're right...at the present the band I'm thinking of buying them for has about exactly that invested in monitors and a power amp to feed them, and it sounds good, for on-stage sound....the guitarist, vocalist and I do several trips out into the audience throughout the night in our show, having major fun, and the time lag starts to interfere with the fun the further we get from the stage sound...I forgot to check and see if you were taking about wireless IEM's or not?

There are plenty of IEM discussions over on the Live Sound Board, and there's even some good information too.

The system I'm using is the Galaxy AS-1000, it is a wireless system and I had the transmitter set up at the board last night, which was about 50 feet from the stage and I had zero problems.

I even walked out back to my truck and I still had a good signal.
