Members Westsailor Posted September 25, 2007 Members Posted September 25, 2007 Or as ya'll say up north 'home made bass' I wish I'd taken some before pics. This is (literally) a POS 'el cheapo' 3rd world P/J clone that I decided to defret. It had been stowed in my forward cabin for about a year & a half. When I pulled it out it was so corroded I couldn't even turn the pots and the Pickguard/etc. screws were so rusted I had to cut new slots to get them out. Only the tuners were still nice & shiny. Salt air will do that. So I'm replacing everything from nut to bridge. It was just a slab sided chunk 'o wood so I decided before the refinish I thought I'd carve the top, give it a little better form. I wish you could better see how well the defretting turned out. Fortunately at least the neck appears to be decent quality (although I do wish it had a rosewood/ebony fretboard). I filled the fret slots with walnut veneer. I wasn't looking for the lines to have quite as much contrast but you work with what you got. Headpiece still needs some cool new decal. I was gonna give it a shot and was prepared (expecting?) to write the whole thing off but I think it's gonna work! More pics can follow if you're interested in seeing the progress.
Members basshunter Posted September 25, 2007 Members Posted September 25, 2007 If nothing else, you can always use it to paddle your dinghy Looks like fun, good luck!
Members Fran da Man Posted September 25, 2007 Members Posted September 25, 2007 You gonna remove the old red color?
Members chris-dax Posted September 25, 2007 Members Posted September 25, 2007 Nice...! I think you should keep the stock headstock decal...don't want to lose any resident mojo... Thanks for posting the pics...I really want to see how this turns out... and yeah, I'd take all the original finish off the body if it's practical to do so... just my preference.... looks good...
Members Westsailor Posted September 25, 2007 Author Members Posted September 25, 2007 You gonna remove the old red color? Absolutely. For now the red is just helping guide the shaping. Haven't totally decided but right now I'm leaning toward finishing it in a creamy 'Telecaster blonde' color. I'd prefer black but I doubt I'll be able to pull off a top quality paint job and a lighter color will help hide any flaws in the finish. But who knows...
Members slapthefunkyfour Posted September 25, 2007 Members Posted September 25, 2007 Strange. The bass that the pickups I sent you came out of, I did the exact same thing to the body. I'll try to find pics. Uncanny resemblance.
Members mrcrow Posted September 25, 2007 Members Posted September 25, 2007 great project...do some red and tan on the headstock...to hell with the decal..i do like the way you transformed the top horntop hole ole chap
Members groutt Posted September 25, 2007 Members Posted September 25, 2007 Yeah, keep us posted. I filled the slots on mine with superglue and also got more contrast than I wanted. Oh well. I'm also thinking about some blond-ish color paint. So I'd like to see how it turns out.
Members lyricpoet Posted September 25, 2007 Members Posted September 25, 2007 to hell with the decal.. Are you out of your mind?!! A bass made in Paraguay in the secret jungles of La Cocainia Oblivia is worth tons of mojo. (Probably made in Brazil, imo). Keep the label. Keep us informed. May the salt water behind your back not corrode your frontside... Old Irish Proverb
