i have a pair or schecter 5's with mahogany bodies that i used live now. they play great and feel great. they sound decent though. they have passive HZ's and an active b/m/t control. playing them through a Mesa head and a Mesa Powerhouse cab i feel they should sound alot better than they do. i confirmed this when i played a killer old yamaha p/j bass through my rig last night.

my first thought is to go with bartolini's have had them before in my pedulla with the active bass/treb pre and it was awsome. i don't really even care about the active pre. i dont want to spent a mint if i can help it though. any suggestions??

I put a set of Bart classic bass series pups in my Stiletto Elite 5 along with the Bart three band preamp. It works very well and really improved the tone to a more balanced tone than it had stock. The Elite 5 has a naturally scooped tone that's a little weak in the mids, but has HUGE lows and good highs. The CBC pups put a little more emphasis in the mids, and are a much better choice for this bass. The preamp is a big improvement too, though if I did it over I would probably go for an Aguilar OBP-3 instead. The Stiletto's are much better basses than the EMG's seem to let them be, although I did play a stock Studio 5 that sounded killer right off the shelf. It all depends on what it is you want to change in the tone of your bass, and if it's worth while to do.

i guess i forgot two things, they are both stilletto studio 5's. and the music is modern heavy popish metal. Nickelback, and {censored} like that. it sounds pretty good i guess. just that the yamaha's passive p/j just had life, realism, and snot. the emg's are kinda bland.

Shoot a PM over to Beam. He has (had?) a Schecter that he put in a Bart split coil neck pickup and Bart humbucker bridge. The neck pup was essentially a pseudo-P pickup in the same sized cover as the stock pups, and his was all passive. It was a great sounding bass. Not exactly a P, but you could hear the P tone quality in it. Bart also makes a five string quad coil pup, which you could even use a mini toggle to switch between standard and reverse P configuration. Never heard one but it sure sounds cool...
