Members 0175westwood29 Posted October 4, 2007 Members Posted October 4, 2007 i have an axl player deluxe 5 string pictured below as you can see its looks like a stingray ? dnt know nout bout electrics but have always thought that the tone is a bit flat and the pick up dnt really get the bottom end clearly on the 5th string and wondered if the cure would be to put in a better pick up on but am wondering if an old stingray pick up could fit? and if it would be a pig to fit? all advice welcome i have a modulus on the way but love the look of this bass and want to get rid of this prob.
Members sunburstbasser Posted October 4, 2007 Members Posted October 4, 2007 Hard to tell from the pic, but a Ray pickup would probably fit under there. Chances are, its just a big hole under the pickguard so if anything needs to be cut it'll just be the plastic.

Members randy rhoads jr Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 well you could always just get a seymour duncan ray replacement, which would be an upgrade most likely over the stock ray pickup anyways. there's also the gfs route
Members UK_Lefty Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Judging by use of the word "nowt" are you from the North of England? (I am! ) Look on US websites for pick-ups - get a Seymour Duncan "hot" replacement for it - loads of output. Be warned though - some of these sites wont take a non-US credit card, and some wont ship certain brands outside the US. E-mail before ordering. Also try Warmoth...
Members guitargod0dmw Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Nordstrand is the best Stingray replacement pickup. It's the only one that's truly engineered to sound like the original ones...which is something you mention. If your bass is anything like a real SR, the body won't have a big hole under the pick guard...it'll just have a spot cut out for the pickup...

Members guitargod0dmw Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 Do you know how to solder? If you do, then replacing a pickup is very easy.
Members 0175westwood29 Posted October 5, 2007 Author Members Posted October 5, 2007 i do havent since college but i can do it. just need to know wat it entails?
Members guitargod0dmw Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 i do havent since college but i can do it.just need to know wat it entails? You unsolder a few wires for the old pickup. They are probably attached to the volume and tone pots in your bass. Then you just solder in the wires from the new pickup. It's very easy.
Members 0175westwood29 Posted October 5, 2007 Author Members Posted October 5, 2007 wicked thanks for that, i suppose secondly now need to find a 5 string sr pickup, or seymour
Members guitargod0dmw Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 I'm telling you...the Nordstrand MM5.2 is going to be your best bet if you want that classic MM tone...which is made for a 5er.
Members 0175westwood29 Posted October 5, 2007 Author Members Posted October 5, 2007 any idea how much your looking at for 1 of those? as the bass is worth bout 200? 300? max
Members guitargod0dmw Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 $115 from www.bestbassgear.com Just about any decent pickup is going to run anywhere from $80 - $200...
Members sludgebass69 Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 have never taken that of but that sounds good, dnt suppose ppl know where to get a second hand ray humbucker from?ebay a good shout? That doesn't look like a MM pickup. Looks like a EMG40/45 typical humbucker stylr pickup.....
Members guitargod0dmw Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 That doesn't look like a MM pickup. Looks like a EMG40/45 typical humbucker stylr pickup..... Yeah! I didn't even notice that in those tiny pics. You might wanna measure the pickup to find a replacement that will actually fit in there. It looks a lot skinnier than a MM pickup. As far as getting a used pickup...unless someone is parting out a SR, it's just not going to happen. EBMM only sells replacements if you turn in the defective part... Anywho...this is what an SR5 pickup looks like...
Members 0175westwood29 Posted October 5, 2007 Author Members Posted October 5, 2007 yeh i know it alot thinner was looking into adapting it possibly ? to match i know it be a mare but i am just wandering dnt mind having to cut and adapt it as i have a new bass on the way just looking to make this bass a bit beta?
Members guitargod0dmw Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 You're probably going to have to route the body if it's not a big hole under the pick guard. Otherwise, you'll just have to cut the pick guard to fit it...
Members 0175westwood29 Posted October 5, 2007 Author Members Posted October 5, 2007 i may have a look i think any chance you can take the pickgurad of with out taking the strings of?
Members guitargod0dmw Posted October 5, 2007 Members Posted October 5, 2007 As long as the pickup isn't screwed into the pick guard...even then you still might be able to do it.
Members 0175westwood29 Posted October 5, 2007 Author Members Posted October 5, 2007 cool its just that i thought of this idea after getting all new string fitted!
Members 0175westwood29 Posted October 7, 2007 Author Members Posted October 7, 2007 yep it needs to be routed out it looks exactly like the pic, wooo!
