i'll be doing this soon enough and as of now i'm looking at a DiMarzio Split P for the pickup. i have a DiMarzio for my guitar and i like it a lot and i've seen great reviews for the Split P and the way they describe it on their website sounds pretty cool, does anyone here use one? also, i was thinking about a gotoh 201 bridge but how much difference is that really going to make? thanks

In this order.

New pots/jack

New strings

New bridge

New pickup

With my SX PJ I found it sounded great with new pots/jack/bridge and my favorite strings. I was initially planning on replacing the pickups, but found that I didn't need to. You pickups and ears are different than mine, so you might not have the same experience/luck.

I'm looking at doing the same thing. Where do you guys buy pots/jacks from? Any favourite tutorials on how to replace pots/jacks? I also heard that shielding it is a good idea - what do I use? Copper tape?

Sorry... I'm new to this DIY thing.

I keep changing my mind about SX basses, I can't see myself buying a Fender P though.

Good luck with the upgrades, everything has already been covered so if you get stuck, do a quick search.

I used conductive paint, but there are a lot of options.

As for the wiring, grab a diagram (Seymore Duncan has a ton) and solder the components where they need to go. If you need more info than that, you're in the right place.

For pots... I see a lot of posts about 250K vs 500K... what does that mean? And what exactly should I be buying? (Links would be nice....)

Yes I'm new to this... can you tell?

Leo Quan Bad Ass 2.

THE BEST replacment bridge for fender style guitars.

I have a BAII on my MIM Jazz and a Gotoh 201 on my SX P....

I prefer the Gotoh....

SX P - I put a set of SD 1/4 pounders, new pots and the Gotoh...I love this guitar...

I bought my caps/pots/jacks from GuitarPartsCanada.com. Good pricing, but they take forever to ship. I tried Fender pots which were also stamped CTS, but they were very flimsy. I broke 2 of them just soldering them into place. I've never shielded my SX's.

Use 250K pots on a P or J. 500K just sounded weak to me. .033 or .047 caps.

It would be wired the same as a jazz.

Bingo. Then you have the option to have Volume-Volume-Tone or Volume-Blend-Tone.

To add from the links, you'd need one more pot.

If you know you wanna change your pickups too, you might consider an EMG P set. It will come with the pots, jack, and the pickups obviously- I'm a fan of EMG's anyway, not everybody is. Just a thought anyway- and I'd vote for the Badass II in terms of bridges especially if you can find a good one used- what kind of music are you looking to play?
