Which Fender Jap Re-Issue should I buy?

At the end of the month its new bass time, but I can't make a decision except "vintage white"...

Here's the short list, all are Jap re-issues:

'57 P-Bass re-issue with maple fingerboard

'62 P-Bass re-issue with rosewood fingerboard

'62 J-Bass re-issue with rosewood fingerboard

All are similar cost, although the '57 re-issue is limited in colour options.

What would the maple f-board do to the P-Bass sound? Would it give more bite, and brightness? Would it detract anything from the low end and the punchiness?

Having played a MIM Jazz recently I loved the playability loads, how much different will the feel and playability be in a genuine fender P? I've never had the opportunity to play one.

All opinions gratefully received,

Thanks

I've just got me a '62 RI P and it is great, plays supa smooth and fast. The rosewood fretboard sounds very punchy! You're right about the maple fretboard sounding brighter. But I prefer the '62 over the '57!

The maple would be less punchy then the rosewood, but it depends on what you like more... a brighter or punchy sound!

I don't beleive fretboard material has much affect on sound.

I think it does, I've played maple, rosewood and ebony fb basses. I think there is a noticible difference in the sound. Not a massive difference mind you but noticible.

If I was buying a Jap RI Fenfer I'd get the 70's one in white!

I have a natural 70's Japan reissue with a BAII on it, and it really rocks! I'd go with a maple fretboard if I were you. A bit brighter than rosewood, and prettier!

Where would one get the Japanese Fenders here in the US?

Can't get them new from a dealer. Either Ebay (for new and used, obviously) or order them from Ishibashi in the Land of the Rising Sun.

+1000 on Ishibashi! I've ordered from them twice, great to deal with. :thu:

I have a '62 Jazz reissue I bought new in 1987. It's one of my favorites.

I had a '57 P reissue briefly. It sounded really nice, and the wide flat board was quite comfy once I got accustomed to it.

My two were MIA. For your options, I'd go with the Jazz just for versatility's sake. They're all fine basses.
